Why? because he cares more about being right about something and disagreeing with STL then seeing STL's point of view..

does that make sense to anyone else?? I dont think I articulated as well as I had hoped to..
I think it has a bit to do with "While I do not agree with your opinion, I will defend to the death your right to say it."

While somepeople take the stance that its just a joke deal with it, and others will back off and attempt to repair the damage.

I dont think there is a right or wrong answer, just like someone cant tell you what is funny its very hard to tell a person what isnt funny either.

Whos right in this? Everyone and no one, do i think my statement was funny? a little. Do I feel right knowing that I may have hurt someone? no....but ill still laugh at my joke....

am I an asshole......depends.....much like humour that is subjective :D

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

I do see STL's point of view, I simply disagree with it. I don't go around making jokes to people I think will be offended, but I do think that there is a time and place where virtually anything can be used as a source of humor. Jews, during and after the holocaust, have made jokes about the genocide in order to help deal with it, and lighten their mood. Soviet prisoners in the GULAG system did the same thing. There are other who went through the same sorts of experiences who would be offended by those same jokes, but it doesn't make them any less funny to those who can deal with it. If the deaths of 10s of millions of people can be joked about by those directly affected, I don't see what can't be, in the right time and place, to the right people.

And I know rape victims who've joked about their experiences, in one way or another.

Having gone though what I have, and knowing the people I know, yea, I'm pretty sure it's as (un)common as I think. I spend 9 weeks as a psych patient when I was 13 surrounded by rape/sexual assault victims. 2 members of my family, and the first woman I ever loved were also raped. Those are the ones I know about, surely more have been and just bottle it up. Do I think that's funny? Hell no. Do I think you can joke about it, in the right time, place, and way? Yea, I do. I wasn't defending niss's joke, only saying that yes, sometimes they are funny, sometimes they do serve a purpose. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and I don't care if they do. They have the right to their own opinions, as do I.

Grimey,

Three things:

1) What exatly do you hope to accomplish with a rape joke? Can the laugh you're aiming for not be be achieved using a diff subject matter? Of course it can.

2) Taste. I thought you had more... Things like rape can be funny, yes. But it is ALWAYS in bad taste on many levels, so why bother? Why risk offending someone who has experienced such a thing? Justifying a rape joke because you may have had some contact with it is totally irrelevent, it's not a badge of credibility you wear allowing you to decide where the line is.

3) It has nothing to do with what I think, it's about common decency and respect - if you can't see that, then I can't debate with you.

Nothing, I don't tell them. Carlin's peice is more about restricting speech for reasons that arn't as good as you think, rather than specifically joking about rape. In any case, the laugh isn't always the whole point. Just as political humor can be funny on it's own, while also educating people about one absurdity or another, black humor can serve as an effective coping mechanism.
Taste. I thought you had more... Things like rape can be funny, yes. But it is ALWAYS in bad taste on many levels, so why bother? Why risk offending someone who has experienced such a thing? I'm not wearing it like a badge, just pointing out that my opinion is due to my experience, not simply being a callous ass. If I don't point that out, people come back at me saying I have no experience in the matter, and that I'm talking out my ass. I do point it out, and, well... As I said, I don't go around making jokes that I think will offend people. I was trying to make a point, that yes, under certain circumstances, just about anything can be funny. I wasn't excusing abusive or intentionally offensive behaviour.
It has nothing to do with what I think, it's about common decency and respect - if you can't see that, then I can't debate with you.
And as I said, I don't go around to people being disrespectful or ignorant of their pain.

When I read the joke I thought you were just a sick perv who can't get a girlfriend and so it might have been a lame attempt to say you like SYT but the way it's going I was probably wrong. And it wasn't cool. Why couldn't you have talked more about what the Doc said?
