Anyone know what happens when you break mins?
-Cancelles out all insurance(breaking laws)
-Invalidates your C of A(As you know have no insurance)
Now also if anything does happen your completely liable for anything that happens after that, and the insurance company is going to say stuff it. I don't know why anyone feels that they HAVE to get in, hell the other day I turned down a YYZ cause I wasn't to sure I could get in there with the ils, if I went down an extra 50' I would but its simple, If the weather is that bad I'd rather just stay home and have a beer.
You mentioned that you were married, well I am recently engaged which is all the more reason for me not to do anything stupid, When the weather is the shits she is in the back of my mind always as in I don't want my bride to be worrying if something happens, your married you should just be sayin screw it I'd rather make the wife dinner
Happy flights

Incredibly well stated...I am impressed. I'd like to sticky that to some people's foreheads.
I've been sitting on the sidelines here for a few days, hoping this thread would just go away, but thinking at the same time that something else needs to be said. It bothers me to post this publicly, but I feel it has to be done. I'm sorry in advance that this will be long-winded, but after consulting with some colleagues, I just have a few things to get off my chest.
First of all, did NACair cancel an entire day's worth of sched flights due to poor weather? Yes. I was off that day, but happened to be in the office while dispatch was calling every agent and MTO office up North to ask for weather/runway conditions. After getting their info, and discussing with Captains and management, the decision was made (bit by bit) to cancel ops. Could we have filled the planes up with fuel, and gone up to give it a try? Absolutely. Is that a necessary expense in a very competitive NWO market where everyone's trying to eke out some kind of decent existence? No. I firmly believe the right decision was made, and am glad I work for the kind of company that would do such a thing. If it's a matter of low ceilings or vis, I'm always willing to go up North and give it a try if they want to send me...heck, it's time in the logbook, and I have no problem going up to see what I can see. If I see nothing, I'll gladly come back home, and give it a shot the next day.
Now, as for the comments made with respect to how things are done up there...well, let me say that I'm pretty sure I speak on behalf of a majority of our colleagues when I say that I am upset, to say the least, that this is how someone chose to defend our company's decision not to fly that day. In fact, upset might not be a strong enough word. The senior Captains here, as well as many who have gone before us, have worked VERY hard to get this company away from having any reputation it may have once had. It pisses me off that in one fell swoop, all our work might as well have gone for not. Sure, we know we still do things on the up and up, but if public perception is otherwise, then why bother? Many of us strive to work for bigger airlines one day, and we sure as hell don't want our resumes thrown out when they see where we've been working, due to a reputation created by careless comments. Now how am I supposed to feel on a day when the weather is up and down in YXL, and I happen to get in a little ABOVE minimums, only to have the next plane miss. In the past, I'd feel lucky. Now, I'll feel like everyone will think I'm a rule-breaking cowboy. Thanks for that.
For those of you who have been tearing a strip off EC for comments that were made, you are all entirely correct. Please don't paint us all with the same wide brush.
EC: Next time you're sitting at your computer, ready to "defend" our company, put on some mittens. I, along with everyone I've spoken to, consider you a friend. As we've already spoken about this, you know how I feel, so I'd rather not have to write anything like this again.
Everyone else: Please, out of respect for the rest of the people who work here, let's let this thread go out to pasture. Thanks.
Swerved.

In a world full of people, only some want to fly. Isn't that crazy?
