What the Mac OS has done is take advantage of the fact it's UNIX operating system has built-in pdf libraries and so can create pdf files natively.
While Unix systems did have more Postscript and PDF support than other systems, Apple took it much further. They use PDF as the basis of the graphical interface and then added in hardware acceleration. Everything is drawn through PDF, and this is what allows them to support PDF creation from virtually any program. It also allows them to add all of the eye-candy effects Mr. Jobs loves to show off. Third party developers can also make use if the functionality provided through the PDF support, though I'm not sure if this has been used much yet or not.
Microsoft has added similar functionality to Vista through their new Aero interface and graphics layer. They have also started their own competitor to PDF, but for files and not the interface.
a couple of small Office inconsistencies - one Word document I have with a graphic image shows fine on my Mac but on PC there appears a second copy of the image. Simple enough to remove, but can't figure out why.
Another document with some tables and columns formats fine on the Mac but on the PC it runs over to other pages. Overall the formatting is the same but I think the PC seems to treat page layout just a bit differently. Again, just have to verify the formatting when you open it on the PC.
I personally haven't encountered any problems going from a PC to a Mac.
Can't remember if I mentioned this earlier but it bears repeating if I did. One other factor that may seem insignificant but holds real value for me is that the screen renderring on the Mac is much easier on the eyes. Fonts and edges are smoother, graphics display more cleanly and overall the screen is much more suitable to day long use.
I've been away from this forum for a few days and I see there are some new posts.
There seems to be a few people well experienced with the Mac's so let me ask a few questions. These are for the macbook not macbook pro. I am looking at a 2ghz processor and 2gb of ram. I have read that the volume from the speakers in Mac OS is very poor, has anyone else experienced?
How is the macbook for watching movies? Again from reading some have posted that the macbook pro is superior for this because it has a dedicated video card ram as opposed to the mac book.
Anyone experienced trouble with the macbook batteries? Not being recognized? not charging? not holding a charge?
And what about heat? A lot of complaints about heat out there.

I don't know about volume on the macbook but movies will be fine no matter what graphics card you have. Watching movies has nothing to do with the graphics card.

It depends, for DVD's it doesn't matter much about the video card. If you want to watch the HD Quicktime trailers, for example, it does. I haven't heard any issues with these, even with the low end Intel graphics used in the MacBooks and Mac Minis.
If people are concerned about running about running non-Intel native apps on the new Intel Macs, you might be interested in the latest Mac OS update.
gli77 - I admit that the built in speakers are rather weak. But a cheap set of earbuds and you're in biz. Or if you have to share with others a set of external speakers works fine. The DVD works great, especially with an external monitor - I got a widescreen 21" and it's great. Also very good for working multiple apps or documents or whatever.
The battery works fine, no problems. A couple of years ago when it was new it would play through a full movie. Not sure now as it's life has degraded a bit. I can get about 3 hours working on documents and html (text stuff). When I play DVDs I have it plugged in so I can't say if it would still make it.
Heat isn't more of an issue than any PC notebook I've seen. Most of them will get hot sitting directly on your lap after 1/2 hour or so.
Dear Tech Support,
Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance -- particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0, NBA 3.0, and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?

Dear Desperate: First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System. Please enter the command: "http: I Thought You Loved Me.html" and try to download Tears 6.2 and don't forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Food 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.
Good Luck, Tech Support
