If everyone feels so hosed then build your own refinery then you can have all the free gas you want.
Unfortunatly the product belongs to the gasoline companies and they can charge anything they want for it and that's the way it should be. Market should dictate the price not artificial caps designed for governments to try and scam more votes.
I'm willing to bet there is people willing to pay $2/liter and if thats the case why shouldn't the gasoline companies be allowed to charge that.

In some former communist states where the totalitarian governments fixed all prices gasoline was really cheap you just had to make sure you had your ration book and stand in line for two or three days for gas .For the car that you waited ten to fifeteen years to get at a subsidized price of five years wages.
Trabant or Moscowvitch anyone ??? not many collectors have these classic cars in their collections eh?Ah the good old days of state controlled poverty. When everyone was poor so nobody could complain about the price of anything cause there was nothing to be had except cheap vodka.
Can you run a moped on Vodka???
Take a good look around these are the good times folks try to remember them if things go south. The days when you could fill your car and drive anywhere you want just for fun .

Hedley -----before you beat-up on poor old Canada about her gas prices there may be a number of things that you aren't considering.
1) In Canada the Provinces all collect taxes on gas and that goes into General Revenues so that they can repair/build their own roads plus their sections of the Trans Canada Highway all year round. That gasoline tax is based on a percentage of each liter of gas. So the higher the price of gas rises, the more the Provincial and Federal coffers take in.
In the US, the States look after State roads, but ALL Interstate Highways are the responsibility of the Feds. The States are all much smaller than the vast majority of Canada's provinces and therefore the costs of maintaining their roads are much less than their peers in the Canadian provinces. The taxes they put on their fuels are based on a set dollar amount and when/if the price rises at the pumps, that set dollar amount on each gallon does not change. I also remind you that it takes 4 Imperial gallons to equal an American gallon and 4.5 American gallons to equal a Canadian Imperial gallon.
So if you really want to accomplish something perhaps, you should try to get the Feds and the Provinces to set an exact dollar amount that they want as tax from each liter of fuel sold. They will dig their heels in and resist because with using a percentage as they do, if gas prices rise, then 19% of $1.25/liter is a lot more than 19% of $ .90/liter. What breaks me up is that Canadians will want and petition their governments to conduct some special investigation concerning gas prices or to enforce the oil companies to curtail their price increases. Christ, these are the same people hauling-in even more money because of those increases and we are asking them to shoot themselves in the foot?
The last point here is very funny to me because it's typical political "which shell is the pea under?" Many years ago we were all told that the revenues obtained from gas taxes would be the monies used to maintain our highways. Nowadays, they don't even try to bullshit us anymore and will state openly that gas taxes go straight into General Revenues to be used for all manner of things. So you don't vote in who runs the oil companies, but you do vote in who runs the governments. I'd try the latter because you got a better chance of some luck and possible change.

No one in Canada has any problem with any monopoly issues or non-competitive agreements?
The point he his making remains. There are monopoly issues, there are non-competitive agreements, and there are ILLEGAL practices contrary to our free market philosophy. I don't think the problem is limited only to Canada. In Canada it just seems worst because of the tax we pay on the already gouged price.

Thought this was a good explanation, watch the video

Basically, the wholesalers are jacking up the prices because of demand, it has been a seasonal trend.
