Don't worry about getting your logbooks and stuff guys. The guys at Peninsulair won't let anything happen to them.

I agree that the guys at Peninsulair won't let anything happen to anyones Log books and PTR's, but arrangements should be made to get them from your Instructor or Tradeport. I was really disheartened with Mitchel's reply. I was also amazed that he was the only one that responded. Not even a "ya ya ya....sorry" . So many politicians are gutless when dealing with a Corporation such as Tradeport. The way they look at it is ...."it'll be all over soon....and everyone will forget about it". Standing behind the big guy is much easier.

I don't know which is worse, loosing the only training facility in the Hamilton area, or loosing the option of training on the Piper's...I know I'm not the only one displaced to Toronto Airways. mmmmm there we go again...that big bad "Toronto" word...Hamilton just loves sending business to Toronto....big, small, Toronto will take them all! Wonder what they're going to do when Toronto decides to woo CargoJet away.....mmmmmm I think they're forgetting about the yesterdays at YHM....

Did you complete the PPL? If yes and you have a licence in your pocket, then NO.
The next school will start a new PTR for the CPL.
Any other opinions?
joco
I don't have a license :/ so what would be my options?
I guess that you have to call insistently Tradeport to release the docs to you.
In lockout situations, the landlord does hold the assets as collateral, but your log book is not Peninsulair property, therefore Tradeport is not entitled to it.
However, the bigger issue for you would be the PTR to be certified by Allan Frosst CFI.... before you can move to another school.

Maybe calling Transport to put pressure on Tradeport? Will it work... no clue.

Do you have a lawyer friend or willing to pay couple hundered dollars for one to write a nastly letter and put Tradeport on notice that you anticipate that you will be incurring loses in the future due to their action... that may get them thinking twice about releasing the student stuff. It is of no value to them anyway!!!

joco

PS. For whatever reason I got my logbook and my certified CPL PTR out of there 3 weeks ago... but I tell you that if they would hold my log book - my property - as part of their dispute, they would see my pretty face at their door daily!!!

Time for some calls to the open line shows! Make a point of naming and shaming the individual culprits.

Heard a few rumours..just thought I'd pass them on. Don't count Peninsulair out they have far from given up. In fact I heard they were still flyin today and are hard at work making that possible for all. Heard they were all paid up when HIAL/Tradeport showed up just after 5 AM Sunday Morning. Hell of a way to wake up I was told. Logbooks and ptr's call Scremin to get something that's your is what I heard. With any luck at all they hope to be home soon, would have been by now if not for certain lawyers. Hey I hope they're back soon, real soon.
They wanted me to thank everybody for their support thus far. I think calling and writing politicians Tradeport, MP's MPP's, all the media and someone even said something about a demonstration at the airport entrance(that one I'd be carefull with). All great ideas. I read where somones called Tradeport a bunch of pr......s. Sorry have to disagree, the world has a use for pr...s. Back when I learn more.

I HATE rumours...but is it true that the founding father/owner/CEO of Cargojet, Ajay Virmani, was overheard by several people saying to Peninsulair's Marty White last winter;
"you're in the way."

business aviation doesn't seem welcome in yhm, either. I was there a couple weeks ago with a citation and ended up getting parked out in the middle of nowhere, on an empty ramp by the museum, too far to walk. Security had to give us rides. Personal service was top notch, after we gave a little attitude, but the facilities are not conducive to us coming back. I've been a little spoiled as of late by american fbo service but from everything I saw, someone intends yhm to be a cargo only airport. This was my first time to Hamilton, and I'd have to say (I'm sorry if I offend anyone) that the city sure seems to have long since lost all ambition and motivation to improve upon itself. It sure looked to have been a grand and exciting place at one point but sure got run down somewhere along the line..., I'm guessing it was a steel town.

That, to me, is like bulldozing down a University to build a hospital.

If the airlines and other companies force flight schools off the field and/or out of business, where are future pilots going to come from?

Sounds like the PenAir operators are ready to go to battle against Tradeport...but can't get a date until next week...wishing them the best of luck! They would also like to pass on their heart felt thanks to all of their supporters and appreciate all of the letters that have been sent to various politicians and newspapers. Hopefully with our efforts and support, they'll be back in business in the very near future. Keep the letters up...even though the replies may be few..... :(

For anyone that needs times certified in their log book, I've been told that Rick White can certify times as well as Alan.

Keep checking here and on facebook (add me - Greg Haza) for information as it comes in. This is far from over and it's going to get really messy for the PR people at Tradeport.

Rick White can certify logbooks once he has access to the stamps and daily sheets, Marty has never met or spoken to the ceo of cargojet(but as it turns out I guess Peninsulair was in the way) and hial/tradeport are a bunch of......I can't say that here. Honesty, integrity, compassion, decency, in fact you can find good things in almost any company with one glaring example. Lies, extortion, don't get me started. Any messages/questions for Peninsulair Management? Just post them here and they will get through. Management of Peninsulair agains thanks everyone for their support now and over the past 62 years. Don't give up cuz they sure as hell aren't going to.

The below was written by the 18 year old Son of Peninsulairs President.
I thought it worthy of sharing with you and hope it touches you as much as it did me. Thank you Glenn for writing it and thank you all that choose to read it.

As of today, November 2, 2008, I have officially lost my faith in the good of the world. The childish illusions that everything will always be ok have been viciously shattered. No longer do I have faith that everyone gets what they deserve, and that there is justice in this life even when it seems there is not. Today, I have realized the tragic state of the world today, and seen the selfish nature of mankind come to a head at mine and my family’s expense. Today, I lost my job, as did my father, and along with it went my father’s business, savings and life’s work. Today, I realized that it really is true that no matter how hard you try to change something; sometimes you just can’t do it.
My father owned a business called Peninsulair that has been located at the Hamilton Airport since my grandfather founded it in 1946. The airport management shifted into the hands of a company called Tradeport International Corporation, and since day one, it has seemed their mission to eliminate our longstanding presence at the airport. Our rent had increased by over 700% in just 10 years since this company began its duty as our landlord. Then, on March 31, 2008, our lease with the Airport that we had been given by the city of Hamilton expired, and today, after 7 months of discussions, lies, extortion and blackmail by Tradeport, they have finally accomplished what they so longed to do. As of about 5 am this morning, a bailiff was sent to Peninsulair where my father slept to guard the hangar, and my father was thrown out by the police, the locks on our building changed, and letters given to my family stating that we no longer had any business to set foot on the airport lands and would be charged with trespassing if we did.
We have been informed that we have 5 days to remove everything from our facility, or else it will be destroyed at our expense.
We have been informed that we cannot even enter the building to obtain such possessions without the express written consent of the landlord, tradeport.
My parents financial situation has been horrid already, my father has not received a paycheque in several months from his business due to the state of the economy and rising fuel prices which caused our business to become almost unprofitable. Then recently, as things started to look up, and some big contracts were in sight, tradeport stomped our hopes, and refused to allow us to lease our premises out by speaking with our perspective tenants and either offering them a better deal once they removed us from the facility or scaring them off with empty threats. On top of all this, they would not give our fuel supplier a lease on the airport to build storage tanks for fuel, and hence they put us out of the jet fuel business for good, eliminating thousands upon thousands of dollars in possible revenue based on the abilities and promises of our new fuel supplier.
My father has taken out thousands of dollars on my parents’ line of credit to help the state of the company in hopes that everything would turn around, which it would have if it weren’t for tradeport. Never have i felt so much hatred for someone as I do toward the directors of operations of Tradeport and HIAL (Hamilton International Airport Limited), and never have I felt such a loss of faith, or such a tremendous weight falling on my shoulders. I am now faced with the decision to either lose my apartment, where I live with my girlfriend, who I love more than all the world, and life itself, or to work full time while attending college, and sacrifice my grades and my health in order to stay afloat. My parents are forced to take out more money on their line of credit in order to help put me through college, and inevitably have to eventually pay it all back, which may not be possible. Their only source of income over the last 10 months has been my mother’s $200 a week cheques from part-time work at a local greenhouse, and somehow they have managed to make things work. My parents rarely speak to each other for any reason other than to argue or to discuss business. To be frank, I am amazed their marriage has even lasted until now.
I had long wondered why so many people my age hated the police and the justice system. I always felt it was there to help us, and to make the world better. I was however tragically mistaken in my childish perception of how things work. The police and the justice system favour the rich, and are there to collect money to drive their own endeavours. They make the rich richer, and the poor poorer. The courts will side with whatever side has more money and a better lawyer. There is no justice, only resolutions skewed to appease the people who have the most power.
A friend of mine from work, and my supervisor, is one of the friendliest and most delightful people I have ever met in my life. Along with me, he is also left jobless. He lives with his mother and grandmother to help them afford their house and is currently having difficulty with his diabetes. He is caught in the middle of an investigation over the murder of a good friend of his 5 years ago. Evidently this is not a good time for him to have one more thing to deal with.
As I fight back the urge to release the tears pulling hard for their right to stream down my face as I write this, it still feels like this life is a horrible dream, and I am still waiting to wake up. Dreams never seemed this real before, my childhood nightmares were never so vivid and horrible.
If this makes the boys from HIAL feel that much better about themselves, and they can pad their own pockets even more, then all the power to them. It has been made clear by them already that a situation such as my own is something that they couldn’t care less about. As long as they can pay themselves a handsome dividend at the end of the fiscal year, they seem quite happy with themselves. I was always at a failure to understand why people were so upset about the world but now I understand.
The human civilization is not made up of mammals or of any species of animal. The organism we most closely resemble is a parasite. We move to one area and destroy everything to satisfy our own needs, and once everything is dead, we move on to the next one. Very few of us feel any compassion for one another, and can never work toward a common goal. We can work together, just not with each other. Take a drive down a busy street and you will discover how much truth this statement holds very quickly.
We live in a society based on paper. Paper slips that are more important to us than anything else in the world. Little worthless slips that determine who is better than who and who can get what from where. It seems so normal and commonplace until you think about it. How foolish we truly are to have allowed ourselves to be lured into such a trap and into such a fake, superficial existence.
These thieving bastards from tradeport have more of these paper slips than I do, and this is why they can do what they are doing.
Anyone who reads this, please contact these people by one of these methods:

Any support is greatly appreciated. I have lost all faith in the good of the world and mankind, I have reached my breaking point, I have fallen and I can’t get up. Please someone help me, help me restore my faith in the good of the world and help me try to turn the tables on these people.

Author 18 Yr old Glenn White whose High School Graduation is tonight.
Glenn graduated from grade 12 with a 91% average. Tonight Glenn is out in his new 1999 Grand Prix GTP.

Never have I had to endure such mental and emotional punishment, and stretch the limits of my self control so far as I had to today. Today myself, my dad, and my co-workers from Peninsulair were allowed into the building by Tradeport to claim our personal property. I was required to show id just to enter the grounds of a building that rightfully belongs to my family and was being followed by security guards like a prisoner. Seeing everyone there, and seeing the expressions on their faces enraged and saddened me all at once.
When I say that I had to stretch the limits of my self control I really mean that in just about every interpretation. I had to fight the urge to break down in seeing the business in this state and seeing my friends and co-workers in this state. Had to fight the urge to try to tell tradeport what I thought of them, for fear it would further jeopardize any good that could come out of the situation. Most of all, I had to fight the urge to ruin the future of a certain tradeport executive, just as he attempted to ruin my future when I saw him laugh and smirk at my girlfriend trying to help carry some things out to my car. I can’t help but be enraged by his ignorance to the way we are feeling right now. What nerve he must have to do such a thing, in such a tense and emotional atmosphere. Does he have a wife? A family? Children? Does he even have the metal capacity to comprehend the level of stress and anxiety that everyone is dealing with right now? Or has he just been brainwashed by the corporation into thinking that none of this applies to us. As I looked over toward him, I could feel my whole upper body tense up. I felt the familiar tingle of adrenalin, and the almost animal like instinct to protect my territory and protect what I love start to take over my body...
Snap back to reality...Is it even worth it at this point to do something like that? Is it worth it to further jeopardize my future, and to give him the satisfaction of seeing that they have really gotten to me?
No, that is exactly what he wants, and I will not let him see me do that. He is not worth my time, and he is not even worth the ground he stands on. Why it is that god allows people like that to succeed and makes me pick it with the hens, I have no idea. The answer is anyone’s guess. I have been told that the lord will never give someone more than they can deal with, and I don’t know how much more I can take to be honest.
And yes I am a Christian. If you are not, that’s fine. I don’t try to push what I believe on you, so don’t try to push what you believe on me, just shut your mouth and keep your head down, ok? Ok.
Anyways. As I looked at this gentleman today, I couldn’t help but wonder how he can show no emotion, and can be so dishonest. How can he go home at night and not feel guilty all of the lying, cheating and stealing that he is responsible for in his business. Never has something torn me apart like what I have experienced in the last few days, and I still can’t get it out of my head for more than 10 seconds.
I can’t explain how much I have appreciated the response from the last note I wrote. The support from people I know is huge, and very uplifting. Greg posted a youtube video, a clip from Rocky Balboa on the comment list. This video has had a huge affect on me over the last 24 hours, and I have watched it about a dozen times.
The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows; it is a very mean and nasty place. It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it...Ain’t nobody that’s gonna hit as hard as the world...It’s not how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep movin forward.
At this point this is the only way I can live my life, I have to keep movin forward, or else I will succumb to the pressure and only allow things to get worse.
I am hoping for the best in the ongoing battle with tradeport, and I am trying to be optimistic. In the mean time, I am going to go look for a job this week, and I am also going to go and get my new car. I am going to let my life keep going exactly how it was, and keep movin forward.
Please send your emails to tradeport, any help at this point is much appreciated and will only help our cause.

TradePort sure makes lots of friends...

Operating on a wing and a prayer
PETER CHENEY

The Globe and Mail, November 7, 2008

HAMILTON — Real Second World War history is a messy business, soaked with blood, sweat and countless spilled beers. And so it is at 447 Wing, also known as the last of the “H-huts.”

Here, at the edge of Hamilton Airport, you enter a time capsule where you can blink your eyes and find yourself in 1942. The bar rail is dented by boots that worked the rudder pedals of Spitfires and Lancasters, and the walls are hung with squadron insignias and photographs of young Princess Elizabeth.

The clientele is vintage too – some of the men who come here for a quiet drink have been regulars for close to 70 years.

But forget the sepia-toned image. 447 Wing doesn't offer the brand of sanitized history you see at a Second World War cenotaph. This is the kind that comes with smells, repair problems and financial woes.
The RCAFA 447 Wing is located in an 'H' hut on the grounds of the Hamilton International Airport. The area was used as a Royal Air Force training facility from 1939 to 1945, and is one of the few remaining 'H' huts in existence from that era. Pictured is 447 Wing president, Judith Brown in the flag room.

Fight to save 447 Wing's 'H' hut

The veterans aren't going quietly as the Hamilton airport pushes to close air-force club with roots dating back to 1939

As operations go, 447 Wing could be compared to a bomber with three engines out and holes in the wings. The airport is trying to kick the club out, its membership is dwindling and it is operating deep in the red. If it weren't for a small group of volunteers who keep it running as a kind of living memorial, 447 Wing would have closed years ago.

“This is a very special place,” says Judy Brown, the club's volunteer president. “Everything in here is real. If you want to see World War II history, it's here.”

The club was built by the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939, when the Hamilton airport was a training base for Commonwealth flight crews. Originally intended as a temporary structure, it was a military-standard design: three prefab buildings, arranged like the letter H.

Although there were once dozens of H-huts across Canada, 447 Wing is now the last of its kind. The rest have all been torn down to make way for new developments.

Connoisseurs of history consider 447 Wing unique, filled with the collective memories of thousands of pilots, soldiers and sailors who have come here to drink, dance and socialize since 1939, when the Hamilton airport was a military training base for British Commonwealth air crews.

“It's a very special place,” says Brenda Wilson, a Hamilton nurse who keeps the Wing operating along with her husband, Rob. (Both volunteer their time.) Ms. Wilson and her husband must cope with a facility that is somewhere beyond disrepair. There are four furnaces, none of them working. The kitchen was declared off-limits by city inspectors after the ceiling collapsed. That hasn't stopped the Wilsons. They have food cooked off-site, then had it reheated in a microwave (an entrée costs $5).

The Wing's finances are the stuff of nightmare. Although there were once close to 500 members, there are now 65, who pay annual dues of $70.

A couple of years ago, the Wing temporarily lost its liquor licence and got hit with a $40,000 bill from the province for unpaid sales taxes. Although that looked like the end, an anonymous donor bailed the Wing out.

Over the years, the Wing has hosted everything from Second World War send-offs and marriage ceremonies to memorials for pilots killed in training (there were 16 in 1942 alone).

The building is home to a rare and eclectic assembly of air force memorabilia. There are 1940s photographs of bomber crews that died in the sky over Europe, and magazines printed when Hitler was still alive.

The ceiling is hung with hundreds of model airplanes, their wings sagging under a growing accumulation of dust. Until a few years ago, a 447 Wing member took them down on a regular schedule and cleaned them with Q-tips, but when he died, no one took his place.

Now, the airplanes hang like small, ossifying bats, their glue joints so dry and brittle that club managers are afraid to touch them, lest they disintegrate.

Each of the airplanes is numbered and identified on a framed list that hangs on the wall, so that guests can learn the fine points of Second World War aircraft taxonomy, such as the difference between a Westland Lysander and a Fieseler Storch.

The Wing was one of dozens of H-huts. (RCAF historians think there may have been 80 or more at flight-training bases across Canada.) The clubs became unlikely icons, fixed in the memory of countless veterans and their families. This week, as Remembrance Day loomed, a group of veterans gathered around a well-worn table to share a beer and consider 447 Wing's highly uncertain future.

“This is part of us all,” said Clair (Duck) Hanson, an 82-year-old who served on a corvette in the North Atlantic during the Second World War. “But you have to wonder how much longer it can go on.”

The building was once the social centre of one of the busiest flight training operations in the British Commonwealth. Thousands of pilots learned to fly here, wobbling overhead in Tiger Moths and Harvards.

Since then, the world around 447 Wing has gradually changed. The Hamilton Airport has morphed into a major air-cargo centre. TradePort International Corp., which operates the facility, has pushed out older businesses that can't afford the higher rents. Last week, a flying school that had been in operation since 1946 was locked out of its hangar after a 10-month rent dispute.

TradePort wants 447 Wing out too, as part of an expansion plan that will increase both cargo and passenger traffic over the next several years.

TradePort spokesman Steve Howse says the Wing is a part of history, but needs a new home and business model.

“This is a struggling operation,” he says. “They need a way forward.”

What that might be, no one knows. Until last week, there were plans to move the entire H-hut structure and its contents to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, which is located just a few hundred metres away. But that plan fell through when the museum's chief executive officer, Dave Rohrer, learned that moving the existing building wasn't feasible. The only viable option was to make a replica building and move the contents of 447 Wing into it.

“That takes the history out of it,” Mr. Rohrer said. There was also a financial obstacle – the cost of making a new building and moving the contents has been estimated at $500,000.

Despite the setbacks, 447 Wing loyalists believe the club should be saved as a special part of Canada's military heritage.

“History is being swept under the carpet,” Ms. Wilson said. “If you really want to honour veterans, you don't bring them out on Remembrance Day, then jam back into the closet. You keep their history alive. Here it is, right in this building.”

My sympathies to Peninsular's situation.

At the same time I must ask why Stoney Creek airport wouldn't be a feasible alternative? I worked at that airport for a while and always figured it would be a great place for general aviation.
Business oppurtunites are there.
Ex: there is no dedicated restaurnt at that location, no dedicated FBO services etc? Ample free parking for customers. Another AMO perhaps.
The experimentel aircraft and homebuilts are already out there.
Helilynx is there.
And it would be a good place to run sight seeing flights etc.
It would take some work, but anything is possible.

Why fight the fight and go broke as opposed to moving an established business that has clientele to a much more viable location with more realistic and managable leasing costs. Getting city councillers involved to move the business? Perhaps tax incetives, etc.

Stoney Creek could be a great corporate/general aviation airport.
Diamond in the ruff? Perhaps?

And just to be clear, I have no controlling intrests in Stoney Creek airport, nothing to gain personally. I am just a long time resident of Hamilton. Its time for this city grow. With growth, come change. If you use your head and not your heart, generally you will be more successful. That is not meant to be a critizism, just an observation.
Good luck to everyone.

How will they get their hangar to Stoney Creek? That seems to be their principle asset (no idea what their fleet consists of) and it seems that they are being railroaded to sell the hangar at a loss.

This sounds like those old westerns, where someone cuts off your water supply and then buys yer 'spread' for cents on the dollar. Amazing how this can happen in the 21st Century. Perhaps if that can be successfully done without sanctions, perhaps a little "frontier justice" might be appropriate?

I can see some asshole who owns the airport doing such a disservice to the businesses on his land, but this is just some f*cking government doing this - who is the government anyway? Sounds like if they are not prepared to support their citizens, it is time to throw their sorry butts out of office? Whatever happens to Penninsulair, don't forget how badly they were treated by the current government. Mobilize the people to throw them out.

Maybe a tar and feathering would be appropriate?

How about getting the hangar declared an heritage building?

At this point in time I don't think the government is to blame. When the city gave YVRAS/ Tradeport complete control for 40 year's,that is when people should have shown some interest in what was going on. CYHM is not the only airport suffering, depending witch side you are on.

It is the city's fault, no doubt about it. They listened to the same lies we all heard 10 or so years ago when the decision was being made as to who was going to run the airport. The city/region had made deals and promises to the airport tenants that they had an obligation to protect. Peninsulair for example was given a 40 year lease with 20 years and a 20 year renewal. It goes way deeper than that but 40 years minimum is what was promised. When it came time to renew the lease tradeport ignored what the city had promised and so did the city. The city in their infinate wisdom had given tradeport so much control/power that they claim there is nothing they can do. How could the city do that? They had made commitments to the existing tenants and just threw them all out with the bathwater. The city has stated without a doubt they would have renewed Peinsulair's lease for a further 20 years, as promised in 1988. When the city tried to help they were told by tradeport to butt out and that they did. Tradeports 1st order of business when they took power was to raise everyones rent by 250%. Yet they had promised not to screw the existing tenants. Tradeport can't be trusted, lies are all they know and they don't give a damn about General Aviation or anything else that doesn't fit their plan yet ask them and they will lie about anything and when you turn around look out. Honesty and integrity are terms they cannot grasp. But once again the City gave them the power so they must take the blame.

Now,that being said. Tradeport and their partner's are very good at what they do. They will put together a winning team at every airport the operate. Their mission is to generate revenue. The way they do this is questionable when it come's to long time player's. In this instance one of the player's is going to get traded.
