Who needs stealth.. Let's build some more Avro Arrows
Re: Here Comes the F-35
F18F (SH)
- Better survivability than the F35
- Tanker supply roll if necessary
- Greater range
- Familiar to ground and flight crews already
- 90% commonality software wise with current F18's
- I'm assuming cheaper maintanence wise with proven systems
- Roughly half the cost per aircraft when compared to the F35
F35
- Stealth
BTW, I read somewhere that the F18F has the lowest cross section on radar for any of the 4 gen fighters that don't have "stealth" capability. So in my opinion, for Canada as a nation with the roll it plays in world moderation, I feel the F18F is a much better aircraft for our Air Force than the F35. Looks to me that this is more of a "potential gain" situation in terms of economics. Which BTW, are all pie in the sky and only "potential". It isn't written in stone that Canadian contractors will be gauranteed devolopment and production of the parts they have been granted up to this point.
My vote goes for the Super Hornet, they can keep their JSF which is pretty much an F16 capable of stealth. But we wouldn't want to stray from what our "closest" allies are telling us to do, would we?

Re: Here Comes the F-35
Let's not bring up that wild turkey. It was killed by our own military in AFHQ and nothing to do with the Americans...and it was a "hit and run" interceptor, but man could it ever run!wildturkey wrote:Who needs stealth.. Let's build some more Avro Arrows
For far too many years we had to make do with second hand useless aircraft that were fun to fly but unsuited for the roles that we needed; after the Second World War and into the jet age all we ever had were aircraft bought by politicians who were bought by big business who were bought by....
Hell our first jet, the Vampire was bought, used, from the Brits in 1948. A single engine tinkertoy by anyone's standards, it served some purpose but it was purchased over the request by the RCAF for the Meteor, a twin engine fighter with long legs...simply because it was cheap.
Give the boys and girls at the pointy end the best equipment possible and get on with the job. We've got too many bleeding hearts in this country who have never served anything other than themselves and they all think that we would be better served by getting rid of the military altogether. BullS@#$!

What kind of experience do you have to make that statement?IanC wrote:F18F (SH)

Not quite. Try again.IanC wrote:F18F (SH)

Re: Here Comes the F-35
Zero experience, so enlighten me. The F35 is far more advanced than the F16 (the A/C that it is replacing), I was just making a generalized asshole statement. I want our pilots to get the best equipment possible for the missions they carry out world wide. I really just don't know if the F35 is the best out there, so give me some background on why it is so great.AuxBatOn wrote:

Or we could buy a pile of new Chinese jets at the Dollar Store, and when they break after a week, just toss 'em in the landfill and get new ones!
Re: Here Comes the F-35
Not too many people in the CF have "many thousands of hours on the Hornet". Of the current Hornet Drivers, I can think of 2 with a 3000 hrs patch. If I know who you are talking about, he has a little more than 2000.IFRATC wrote:Specifically posted to Washington with many thousands of hours of hornet time acting in a liasion position overseeing this project.
Enough said....IanC wrote: Zero experience
To achieve what exactly?IanC wrote: The F35 is far more advanced than the F16 (the A/C that it is replacing), I was just making a generalized asshole statement.
You don't really know anything about the fighter force and what it does/what it needs. Hardly in a position to discuss it. Lots of the things I know about the JSF, I am not willing to discuss it openly.IanC wrote: I really just don't know if the F35 is the best out there, so give me some background on why it is so great.

Re: Here Comes the F-35
You're right, but as a tax payer and citizen born and raised in this great country I think we all need an explanation as to why the F35 is the best option out there. Saying what you are saying is useless "You're wrong and I won't tell you why because I'm not at liberty to discuss it." How about telling me what the CF air support roll is defined as for starters than?AuxBatOn wrote: You don't really know anything about the fighter force and what it does/what it needs. How many hours do you have in a Hornet btw? Just wondering, because you seem to be super familiar with everything so I am assuming you are military. In which case, thank you for your service.

Re: Here Comes the F-35
Symmantics I guess..."thousands of hours" does equate to more than 2000. And yes he is the one with just over 2000hrs. Same guy. We have known each other for a very long time. Flew together in our early years at CRGS together. I am sure you know who I speak of...We are still very close. Had the privilige of flying the Tutor together.
