Franchise regional district manager.
I think the mount royal university program is probably just as good as ever, if that is the direction you want to take.
They have fairly new planes and that is either awesome or terrible depending on your opinions. They only accept applicants that are PPL so you could have got that far on a nice conventional gear plane then transition there. You'd be well prepared for ten years later when you have enough hours to apply for an airline. A few times in the past it used to be one of the programs recognized by Canadian etc.
Most here including me are of the opinion that getting a CPL and a degree in something useful like engineering is better. That way if you decide later you would like to make money or live in a nice house or something you could get a job and afford that sort of thing maybe even buy a plane and fly for fun.

Re: Mount Royal
I'm doing my training at YBW right now, although not at MRU. From the people I've talked to, working or training at YBW, most of them have a high regard for the MRU program. Everybody seems to agree that you'd get top notch training at MRU, however, one of the major drawbacks to the program is the cost.
Many FTUs are considered post-secondary institutions and thus you'd be eligible for student loans if you went to one. I'd advise you to call around and see who does offer a program with student loan eligibility. Off the top of my head, the three at YBW that I know for sure offer it are MRU, CFC, and SATC.my commercial, multi, and IFR that can grant student loans in the Alberta area.
I agree with Beef, however, having a degree in a certain field doesn't necessarily translate into something useful unless you apply it. What I mean by this is that if you're not really interested in engineering, for example, then it's not really useful to you. SImilarly, if you are interested in engineering and you do get an engineering degree, but then don't use it for ten to twenty years while you're flying, then it lose your medical, you'll probably have a difficult time finding a job with no relavent work experience. Many pilots will tell you to have a backup plan, but that doesn't necessarily mean a degree. If you can figure out a backup plan that correlates with your education at MRU, perfect.and a degree in something useful like engineering is better

Municipal worker.
You never really know how things in life are going to go but. If you have an aviation degree then get a pilot job at an airline it could get you a desk job if you lose your medical after a few years.
If you lose your medical just as you finish the program you probably won't be able to get a desk job at the same airline. Then again maybe you can. Either way you can't fly without that paper.
Not being able to hold a cat 1 will not affect getting a job with a related degree in a non aviation field.
Engineering was just a quick example because, it makes you somewhat employable in both aviation and a few places where guys are making above average wages.

Re: Mount Royal
I have to admit I don't know much about MRU but based on the fleet it's not a place I would recommend anyone go for training. CPL students should be looking outside, not at a G1000. When a student gets their first multi job flying a clapped out navajo, how are well are they going to fly without their fancy screens?

Heh, and people wonder why MRC, oops MRU grads have such a bad rep in the industry. When I got my first job on a Navajo, I was surprised that I was teaching Captains of things they didn't know, which surprised and shocked me.

Henri is back! 182driver, why did you leave us?You had to be disciplined to stay the 2 years for your
Aviation Diploma, lets put it that way. When I got my first job on a
Navajo, I was surprised that I was teaching Captains of things
they didn't know

Dam it, if only I had been fortunate enough to have had you as an F.O. back when I started flying stuff like Navajoe's, just imagine how much better a pilot I would have been.I was surprised that I was teaching Captains of things they didn't know, which surprised and shocked me. All of them were out of "local" flying schools without the advanced training.
ahhh....well I guess that is just the luck of the draw for us uneducated people.
