I can see how the profession has gotten to this stage....
Pilot says to company owner, "Its a bit pretentious to call me Captain. After all, we are not really professionals...anyone can do it...you don't have to pay me much either and I will pay for training!"
Come on guys...to be treated as professionals, we need to look at ourselves as professionals, AND act like professionals.
How is it a disgraceful attitude to have? What has what I decide to call myself got to do with my level of professionalism?
Calling yourself captain doesn't suddenly make yourself more professional than someone who refers to themselves as "The pilot".
At no point am I unprofessional in the cockpit, in fact I'm quite the opposite. I was paid well for where I was flying and the training was all paid for.
I just don't feel comfortable of being called captain, and being compared to the guy that flew them in in the 747.
If I walked up to the average Joe and told them I was a captain, their response would be asking what type of plane do I fly? A 737? 777?
But hey, each to their own I guess.

You are the PIC of the Caravan...don't be ashamed to be the "Captain"...doesn't matter what the aircraft is.
Re: who qualifies to be a "captain"
I recall a refueler from somewhere in the Mideast ....may have been Egypt .... showed up on the ramp in a pilots shirt complete with 5 bars. I wasn't sure what to call him. One time in Mumbai, some military guy ...with 5 gold stars on his shoulders .... showed up with 50 airport security soldiers with AK47s. I believe I called him SIR. I know what I am .....and I think that is all that really matters.
My thoughts .....
