LOL. Not really.
We also talked about the soil contamination. Right now there is a hotel standing where previously Eldorado Mines had barrels of yellowcake (uranium) sitting outside. This would have been Hangar 11, last tenants Time Air and Gateway prior to that.

Re: YXD countdown has begun
It really is about nothing more than the EIA trying to get there numbers up at all cost and move all traffic out to the International airport, the little planes can go to cooking lake and the GA business guys can pay $50.00 to land plus $6.50 / seat based on there type certificate and $30:00/sf to park. If you don't like it I am sure they would like you to sell your business A/C and fly commercial to again boost there numbers.
I am sure that they have a nice little relationship (Airport advisory board w/ all the mayors, and elected officials from the nearby towns) to keep every one feeding into the plan. This is the case in BC w/ the YVR airport management group, they have elected officials tied up, it's a great plan as every one wants to maintain commercial service into there communities' and hammer parking rates, land use fees, maintance charges to keep the revenues up and the wheel turning. The Fed's won't help as they get a kick back(disguised as rent) on the revenues that are generated, what a great system to keep the wheel turning!
I don't know the mind that set this all up when the Feds unloaded the airports on these groups, it is a very well thought out plan, 30 year leases, bring elected officials onside, rent, set your own fees etc. It truly is a utopia and I thought the only people that may have had a better setup was the WCB, but these guys have them beat cold! IMO
There really needs to be some oversight policy set by the Federal government on how these airports are operating, Landing fees all over the place, terminal fees, fuel tax, etc. But there probably never will as they are at the trough that they agreed to when the airports were offloaded onto the specialists. Sad state of Canadian aviation.

Here is R.C.A.F. Station Edmonton before everything moved to Namao.
When my father was posted from R.C.A.F. Unit Fort Churchil to R.C.A.F. Station Namao in February 1961, we stayed at the Pan Am Motel on the Kingsway. It was torn down many years ago. The aircraft were coming and going non-stop over the motel all for the three weeks we stayed there.
Cheers...Chris

Beefitarian, when we meet for spring rolls next week, maybe we can plan some flights up to YXD and also scope out that Parkland site (if you haven't done so already). I'm looking forward to Tuesday!

Re: YXD countdown has begun
Flew what probably was my last career flight into YXD yesterday. Felt a myriad of emotions from disgust, disbelief, anger, to dismay. Incredibly shortsighted and self-serving to close this jewel.
The Shell will cease operation on October 31st, from what I'm told. and last flights out are November 15th.
May possibly make it there one or two more times but not counting on it.
So sad..

It is a bad deal!! Just about them trying to get the numbers up at YEG. Makes me sick!

I too. When I hear that kind of phrase being used in conjuction with any kind of government involvement with a project it tells me something isn't kosher with said project.

There is most likely some dirty deals and our soon to be ex-mayor and another certain councillor. The mayor is a land developer and why would he push so hard to shut it down before he leaves?

A few of us are planning a trip up to YXD from YBW on October 12th. PM me if you'd like to join us!

I will work to arrange parking by the Museum and see if there are some other things the Museum can do for those that want to fly in for the last time in a group.
We can use this thread and get everyone to spread the word.
Blatchford Field deserves a proper send off I guess we need to figure a way

My family owns Thomas Aircraft that has the hangar next to the museum. I can find out if you can use the ramp there. I'll let you know.Tom H wrote:I will work to arrange parking by the Museum and see if there are some other things the Museum can do for those that want to fly in for the last time in a group.cyndy wrote:A few of us are planning a trip up to YXD from YBW on October 12th. Tom and Rac...you guys are amazing! Thank you xo
Re: YXD countdown has begun
Hey Cyndy, if it hasn't already been done, you should start another thread with the topic being a commemorative flight to YXD on Oct 12. And link to this thread.
If it works you should switch your fly-in day to Oct 5 to coincide with the dinner that Tom just posted about:

Just spoke to ECCA Field ops and they have given the Aviation Museum alot of lattiude to parking adjacent to the Museum as long as we don't block active operations or fuel trucks.
If you are coming in a group call the Museum at 780-451-1175 and we will open the airside 100' gate on the North end of the Museum so you can get in when you arrive.

Brilliant idea! I'll set this up later today...just heading into a meeting at the moment. How do I link this thread though? (Technologically challenged); as for changing the date...for selfish reasons I need to keep it the 12th...it's my 25 year high school reunion on the 5th (god I'm old!) - although I dropped out of high school, I've still been asked to attend lol

Just copy the URL in the address bar on this thread and paste it into your post on the other thread.cyndy wrote:How do I link this thread though?
Re: YXD countdown has begun
Hey Cyndy, If you need more parking or overnight parking on Oct 12 you can use the ramp at building 15 (Thomas Aircraft). Either park against the fence on the south side or in the parking slots on the east side. Provided you don't block the main hangar door on the south side.

Re: YXD countdown has begun
This thread is too depressing to read.
I hope Edmonton enjoys the 'benefits' of this decision for years, and come to recognize the 'wisdom' of their decision. They deserve it.
Am I bitter? You bet your ss!

Re: YXD countdown has begun
I'd like to invite the city Councillors to go on a fly-in fishing trip next summer. Perhaps their boat will be hit by an untimely meteor. Then they can be medi-vaced to Edmonton International in an amphibious sea-plane. On the long trip to the hospital maybe they will blow a rad hose in the ambulance while stuck in traffic..
Sad day for sure. I didn't think it would happen so soon. I was planning a trip in on December 2nd to renew my passport. Boo Hiss...
