For those interested and in the area, the Vancouver Soaring Association (based at Hope, BC) does an airline pilot's course once a year the same way. People camp on the field (or stay in a hotel in Hope) and get their transition done in a week.Meatservo wrote:Man, I am jealous right now. Acouple of years ago there was that glider club in Quebec that had the one-week course for ATPL holders to "convert" to glider, and you camped out at the field. I had my wife all talked into letting me go, but busy-ness at work got in the way. I must do it someday.

I was able to squeeze in one more flight on the last day of gliding for this season. It was a beautiful day but with no lift at all.

If you're dealing with rotors or rapid subsidence and you don't have anywhere to go on the lee side... then there is little you can do.
However... there are quite often sub-ridges that extend off the lee side of the main ridge. Again... get yourself over the pointiest formation you can and you will find lift.
I spend almost all of my time on the lee side of mountains... and convergence is one of the most powerful sources of lift after thermals....

I miss gliding! It was a ton of fun.
I'm gonna have to go to Hope for some gliding next time I'm in BC.
