Side question from those in the know: Wouldn't they have been a tonne or two over their landing weight with all that ferry gas? Doesn't that require a pretty major inspection to the landing gear?

I doubt they were over weight on landing, and I'm sure they were aware of that. As for the overspeeding prop, I don't know the performance or limitations of this aircraft but to bring the prop rpm back to the green arc probably wouldn't be so much that it would cause more drag than thrust. The benefits of leaving that engine running (as long as you're within all operating limits), means you're still producing power. Even if it isn't contributing to adding a lot of thrust, it's still acting as a power plant (think generating purposes).
