To anyone who was pointing fingers about government incompetence allowing this fire to spread:
Looks like they did a good job considering how big the fire was: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/the ... e29930041/

I'd still love to the the Ruskies show up. I'd bet they do things differently than we do and we might learn a thing or two. Language barrier would be a real issue in the airspace, but when help is offered and you say no thanks, the next time they might not offer.

I think the last thing congested firefighting airspace needs is a language barrier.co-joe wrote:I'd still love to the the Ruskies show up. It'd have been cool to have the Ruskies around if just for the "awesome" factor of seeing the BE-200s in action.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe NDB approaches just aren't for you

Seems like simple logic that the premier and prime minister should be at sight of a major disaster if only to boost moral. I renember the howls of protest after Katrina when Bush didnt go immediately.

Actually I kinda of disagree with that. Having someone like there just takes time and resources away from managing the emergency. They should open the purse strings and then after everything is settled down and people are coming home to what is left to pickup the peaces then and only then they can go ahead and show up for there damn photo shoot.cgzro wrote:Seems like simple logic that the premier and prime minister should be at sight of a major disaster if only to boost moral. Yep. I don't know what politicians are supposed to do if they actually show up to a disaster.
Over an hour of wasted time for a five minute press conference and photo op last year by our former PM and... unfortunately.... current Premier.
The picture says it all.....

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

He would be useless in YMM. He should have been in YEG meeting evacuees right away and not going to YMM a week and a half later for selfies with emergency staff.

Cut the guy little slack - when is the right time to go? The day after, when the chaos is ongoing?-Well, that's too soon, he's just getting in the way; ten days after?- well, that's too late, he finally made time for a visit?HiLo wrote:Just Un Trou d'Eau finally made time for a visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qljJgt_oQdc
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Re: Fort McMurray mandatory evac
During the Haiti Earthquake relief, ramp space was a big problem in Port-au-Prince, where over 100 relief aircraft were landing every day. Relief aircraft had to offload quickly and take off again to free the ramp space to subsequent aircraft. Many aircraft would spend several hours in the holding pattern, waiting for their turn.200hr Wonder wrote:Actually I kinda of disagree with that. Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton decided to pay a visit on Jan 16, 6 days after the quake. I was in Haiti then. She didn't even leave the airport but the Americans who were running the show decided to divert a number of relief flights while Hillary was on the ground (4 hours), on security grounds. Several aircraft were diverted to the Dominican Republic, including one arriving from France which contained a full field hospital. The French were livid......
But scoring political points and getting her picture taken in Haiti was more important to Hillary than letting a field hospital arrive.....
This is from the French newspaper "Nouvel Observateur's" website, on Jan 16, 2010 the day of Hillary Cinton's visit to Haiti:
Re: Fort McMurray mandatory evac
The layers of minions between somebody as high up as Clinton and the planning of a trip like that creates a real isolation. I saw it just between Generals and Captains where the General was clueless about what was actually going on. The chance Clinton was even aware of flights being diverted to accommodate her visit are remote. Whether she would care if she were aware is another question that we don't have the answer to.
