Driving the the truck is not bad option for temporary job position. Me personally, before became a pilot ,used to drive a truck for 12 years and now at this tough time, found several positions for night switch shift job, between cities. It’s not really hard to drive on the highway. Salary is more then enough to survive before return to plane. I live in Montreal.

How much waiting is involved and schedule pressure? That's something that always seemed like a drag for me. Spending hours (unpaid) waiting to load or unload.

It's bullshit to have to deal with that in both careers

Yes. Our passengers/cargo should always be waiting for us to grace them with our presence.

Call me entitled but any time you're "on the job" (ex, you can't drink) you should be paid for.

"hey, did you fly in the past 24 hours?"
- "no, we didn't"
"great, that was your day off! hope you enjoyed it!"

or, the medevac equivalent:

"hey, did you fly in the past 10 hours?"
- "no, we didn't"
"great, that was your rest. hope you had a good sleep!"

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Oh, on that I fully agree (well, mostly - you also can't drink 12 hours before flying... should those 12 hours not be paid then?).

If I'm getting paid to sit around and do nothing while other people get their shit together, I'm not complaining. But you're right - if I'm not getting paid for it, I'm very unhappy.

It takes a lot of guts to drop an aviation career and just get on with it. Having done it, I can say that it is hard. You do what you have to do.

It certainly isn’t that uncommon to see/hear of individuals leaving a career in aviation in pursuit of other interests. I have seen it happen over the years from all sides, general aviation, bush, corporate and even airline. The latter is usually after a layoff, as one person indicated” just wasn’t interested is chasing flying all over the place again”. I assume like yourself, most were content with their decision and moved on to success in their chosen endeavours.
