Omega's sales are expected to reach over $3 Billion this year. They're clearly doing something right to have that much demand.
You bet they are.. Its called branding.. Proof.. You have men using phrases like "it looks nice", to justify buying an overpriced piece of jewellery.
Now....where have I seen that phrase before?
The pro suit, anti sweat pant proper attire is about fitting in socially. A big ass watch that does everything but the laundry , in most cases, is not considered a socially appropriate necessity.(well except by the types of men who like to "look nice" )In fact, in Canada,it pretty much results in the opposite response.
In some other cultures it is considered almost a requirement,,......if you are filthy rich.. If not, it indicates that you are a big fat wannabe phony. But one that.....looks nice..at least according to themselves.

By the way, about a watch quality. I’m lucky enough to afford almost any toy I want, so I had (actually, still own just don’t wear anymore) 4 watches worth at least $100,000 total (including already mentioned Seamaster – it’s the cheapest one). ALL of them broke in first year, and I have not done anything extreme. And, no – they are not fake, purchased at very fancy watch stores in Switzerland. Of course, everything was fixed under the warranty, but you have to wait for parts forever, because they are so unique !

Wanna hang out with Trey and me? Our intrests include flying around in beavers, driving late sixties muscle cars and lotus 7s, scotch whisky, etc.

I also have four wrist watches, valued at several hundreds of dollars collectively. Only problems I've had are the batteries dying.

I am thinking of getting a battery for the nicest one a sieko with the slide rule around the outer ring now that I'm flying again. It seems taking out the cell phone to check the time is even less convinient in a plane than a car.

Hmm, sorry but I have to call BS on you. No one who has done well enough in life to "afford almost any toy I want" would feel need to boast about spending 100k on 4 watches on some Internet forum.

Also the chance of 4 Swiss automatics failing in a year is VERY low, the omega SM has the same movement as my watch (a Val 7750) and those don't break very often.

Anywho, BS

In the past couple of months I have flown the Husky to Halifax and back as well as here on the west coast looking for property.......still have not ever worn a watch since 2005.

Give me a call Cat, I'll give it a good home for the rest of my career. A Breitling doesn't deserve to spend it's golden years in a safe deposit box.

I'd wear a Breitling for $25.

My wife and I were in Costco yesterday, and I show her an Omega watch with a $3999.99 price tag. She says 'yeah right, maybe if the decimal place was one place to the left!' Then I showed her the Citizen Eco Drive for $299.99 (that's how you do it gentlemen!)

I didn't get either... but maybe by next season I might have to get a grown up watch...

While we're on the topic, my Citizen skyhawk broke after 2 years (minute hand fell off) and they wanted $100 to fix it even though it has a 5 year warranty. Didn't fix it, never bought another Citizen.

I got the Tissot Touch a few months ago. Works great, has analog and digital, holds a second time zone for UTC. Red back lighting, stop watch, timer, compass, altimeter, temperature gauge and it isn't too flashy looking with whiz wheels on the azimuth. It will set you back about a grand though.

I guess they must have thought you did something abnormal to break it, rather than it being a crappy watch with a manufacturing/design flaw. Were you doing 20g in a centrifuge? Dropping it on the floor every day?

If it was me, I would have haranged them until they offered to fix it free of charge.

No, they admitted it was a manufacturing defect, but in order to fix the watch, they had to open it, and if they open it, you automatically get charged $100 because they have to replace the weather sealing if they open it. I told them to pound sand, so they sent me the watch back, unrepaired, and the dealer gave it back to me with a nasty letter because they had spend money shipping the watch to Citizen for me. Needless to say I don't buy any watches or jewelry from that dealer anymore.

In my opinion when you pay $600 for a watch and the hands fall off, the company should be embarrassed enough about it to fix it no questions asked. There are companies out there like Telex or Snap-On that feel this way but Citizen obviously isn't one of them.

You could always take them to court (or just threaten it), but the time spent doing that may not be worth the effort.

I agree that most reputable companies will fix something like this free of charge. Last year my 7-year-old Canon IXUS 400 digital camera developed a pink tint on any pictures taken. Even though it was well out of warranty, they repaired it free of charge because it was a manufacturing defect. I just had to pay for shipping to them, but they paid for shipping back. I couldn't believe they did this for a 7-year old camera, and I'll definitely buy from them again.

From what I'm hearing, these $500+ watches aren't really any better than my 20 year old $40 model, which is mostly doing fine.

I have a simple wind river carabiner watch. I don't like having anything on my wrist while I'm flying, I'm not sure why. It only cost me $35ish from marks work warehouse. The only issue I see with it, is it scratches when I load an aluminum canoe onto an airplane.

I just dropped the seiko off for a new battery. I know I'm top bidder on .'s old brietling but that guy is kind of unreliable and I could be out bid again by some smart alec like IFP. I was going to make it my avatar but that seems too tricky so here's how it looked as my avatar at another forum that's easier to use.
