Re: Ice Pilots Back
yesterday was a sad shoe.
Everything ends. Poor dog
Never had a pet but I guess it becomes like family after so many years.
I could see Joe and son where really sad about the situation
Also Joe is realizing things will not say the same forever. As you get older, you try to hang on to your past, but life moves on. I realize that now as every year goes buy and just getting older and kids getting bigger.
You realize life after you start loosing friends and that we are just mortal beings
I like Ice Pilot, good entertainment.

They were eyeballing baggage weights?! Weighing bags isn't bringing Buffalo into the modern era, it's getting it into the 80s or 90s.

G'day
I have to be honest. The part about Sophie dying brought a few tears to my eyes.
Cheers...Chris
Doesn't get more sad than losing a dog.
Try saying that to a parent who's buried their own child. I have not done that but my closest friend had to do that and a pet dying is not nor should it be in the same category.
By the way I love dogs.

Re: Ice Pilots Back
That was a good episode, and sad for those of us who have had dogs.
What I quite didn't understand is why TC would require Joe to shut down Buffalo if he didn't step down as Executive Officer and appoint his son to the position. Did Joe not have some certification or diploma to do the required reporting, or was it just bad blood between him and TC? Or was he capable, but flat out told TC he refused to follow the required procedures?

Yup .... if you've ever owned a dog, that was a tough episode because it shows that even a crusty fellow like Joe can have his personality softened by the love of a faithful dog. They can sure work their way into your heart.
No Accountable Executive, no AOC ... its that simple. TC managers wouldn't have stated who should be appointed, only that for some inexplicable reason, Joe was likely unable "to work harmoniously with Transport Canada" and therefore a Notice Of Suspension would "kick in," and the operation grounded. As President, Joe could have selected anybody from coast to coast to be the new Accountable Executive .... his son is an excellent choice.

unless things have changed, most airlines use average baggage weights and don't weigh the bags.Diadem wrote:They were eyeballing baggage weights?! Weighing bags isn't bringing Buffalo into the modern era, it's getting it into the 80s or 90s.
Re: Ice Pilots Back
The last episode was misleading. It was advertised that the old dog was on it's last legs and finally had to be put down.
Yet at the end, Joe looked like he could carry on for years.

Yes many do but they are required to do regular sampling to derive an average bag weight.Longtimer wrote:unless things have changed, most airlines use average baggage weights and don't weigh the bags.Diadem wrote:They were eyeballing baggage weights?! Saw ed show and Joe birthday Nice present he gave himself.
I think they are trying to show a kinder side of the man if it exists since I don't know him
At least he gave the guys a chance on the DC-3. Must be cool to fly that, good for them

There is a kind side to Joe. He comes across rough but he does have a huge heart. In the past years Joe use to donate the DC3 to junior hockey teams for fuel and pilot expenses. Many people fly on the sched and Joe refuses to take a dime from them. It is unfortunate he has a fuse that lights so quick as it takes away from all the good Joe has done for the communities in the NWT that he doesn't run around and insist his picture go in the paper for it. I believe Joe pulled back most of his flight donations when other companies with more modern aircraft started getting paid to fly and then the non profit organizations that paid for the flight would thank them in the paper etc for the help.

It is tough to work for someone where perfect equates to normal. And when there is a glitch, even if it is being rectified, you are being yelled at.

I have a question for any Electra drivers. Watched the episode where the fellow was checking out as F/E and noted that he seemed to handle the thrust levers pretty much throughout the flight including a bumpy approach to a fairly short strip. I know that some military ops have the F/E doing that (Argus for instance) but is it SOP on the Electra (or the Aurora/P3)? I never encountered that in 20,000 hours, most of it on aircraft much larger than an Electra.

Re: Ice Pilots Back
Joe definitely has a soft side. Neither Joe nor Buffalo have ever made a public display of their generousity in hauling everything from hockey players to SPCA dogs.
I've been to the hangar many times and when Joe is around he always invites me in for a closer look. Maybe he just gets tired of me staring through the glass into the hangar, I don't know. Or maybe it was my Austin Airways cap that did the trick.
Sophie was a good dog and it was sad to see her in pain, but all good things must end.

Please don't compare civilian flying to military. No one can afford to fly like the military. I have seen enough military on a twin otter if it was civilian it couldn't take off.Idle Thrust wrote:I have a question for any Electra drivers. Show last night was good. I remember writing the Iatra. To bad never did get the job and now expired.
It was not easy.
Saw Joe teaching. Seemed like a good instructor to the new guy there.
Those guys have the experience. Love the DC3 landing and the experience Captain taking over and then just laughing

Good to see CUE flying again with a new paint job. I remember that aircraft when it was used to calibrate instrument approaches with DOT. Didn't know that it was the first 'plane to land at the newly-built YZF airport.
Re: Ice Pilots Back
I thought it was kind of odd that the indian guy had been working there for quite a while and only wrote the IATRA when he was going to be checked out. Why wait till the last minute?

Re: Ice Pilots Back
Well Joe showed his bad side again poor Indian but at end he did fly. Must be neat to fly part of history. Well mike what 40 pounds in 40 days mom.
Re: Ice Pilots Back
I'm wondering how he gained that much weight back after losing it all for the F-18 flight not that long ago??? How much does a guy have to eat to gain that fast? Wow...wan2fly99 wrote:Well mike what 40 pounds in 40 days mom.

Re: Ice Pilots Back
You can't believe how easy it is to put it back on. I probably eat less than half of the food I used to a few years ago and easily 1/3 of what I did in my twenties.I'm wondering how he gained that much weight back after losing it all for the F-18 flight not that long ago??? I have to very actively work at losing every pound. They come back very quick, no effort and seeming like no extra food required.
