Oh and we saw these guys bombin around quite a bit. Anyone on here?
Where are you at in the Twin? I would guess YLC but I've never been there personally.
As for the Caravan, he was running supplies to Lac Belanger camp all summer. Rumour has it that bringing the supplies the CYFB and shuttling them down to the camp was cheaper than waiting for them to get to Kuujjuak.

That sure was in Kimmiruit.
Doesn't surprise me that it'd be quicker that way either! Are you flying out of YFB?

I'm curious as to why they werent using the twin out of YFB.
We were doing that work the year before after pushing them hard. They were flying drums from salluit and wakeham bay with a Bell 205. I guessed they were burning 5 drums to get 2. I kept telling them that surely there was some place within 10 miles of the camp that we could get in and out of with the twin. Sure would have saved them a ton of money if they had got the strip ready a year earlier. And then they go with the caravan on the lake a year later. Not sure what happened there.
Here is a link to a vid of the strip at Bellanger.

I'm guessing that the lake you see in the background is where the caravan was operating.

Great Slave Helicopter's Bell 212S, the Eagle Single conversion. Just found these two while going through the shoot.

That was a neat video - is that a typical approach? It seemed very shallow to me, but the video might give that impression. I'm assuming a TO?

It was shallow. Not my normal way of doing things.
There are two schools of thought on this.
One is drag it in with power on which gives you a sure touchdown spot and lots of reverse right away because the Ng is up and the engine accelerates quicker. I don't like this due to what happens if you loose an engine when you're draggin in under alot of power and more than likely close to Vmc. But it does let you feel out the airplane and what it wants to do today with this load and C of G. In the case of this video it isnt as flat you might think, there was not a lot of power on.
My prefered approach was higher with less power on. I found this to be more difficult when you're switching airplanes. Each one is different and on a 600 foot strip you don't want to find out that this one likes to fly and therefore float because you had it pinned at the speed your other machine liked for that weight. So I think the steeper approach is less forgiving. You have to know your machine and get the speed right. In my case I generally always flew the same Twin, seXXyB.
I think most pilots I've talked to about flying the Twin prefer draggin it in.
My .02.

Same school of thoughts with the Islander, the ol' drag it in under power or just plant it where you want it.
When I was new at it, I always dragged it in... it gives you the ability to put it down right THERE when you pull the throttles back and you're touching down with the nose high and stalled.
With time and comfort however, I know the plane well enough to get it where I want it stalling where I want it without dragging it in at low speed/high power... Although I do use that on occaision if the strip and the load and the weather call for it... plus its important to keep those skills sharp.
Nice video

Grasssshopper! When were you there?
Those sand bars are a bitch! I think we've all scared ourselves with 'em. Especially after hearing about the twotter that they drove RIGHT up onto the "garbage" island.
Beautiful area indeed!
