Grease
Anyone know where I can buy a tube (not a case of tubes) of Aeroshell Grease 22 near YVR?
For that matter, which grease do manufacturers usually recommend for use on tailwheel axles and swivels?
While we're at it, anyone want to explain how to choose which LPS to use for a given application? 1, 2, or 3?

Re: Grease
Can't help you on where to buy locally. Aircraft Spruce would be happy to ship a single tube to you. Might be cheaper in long run than driving for it.
I'm sure 22 would work fine for all your all your wheel bearings and swivel. Would be a good idea to completely remove any previous grease if you don't know what was used previously. (you don't want to mix greases that may not be compatible)
LPS 1: Light weight dry film lubrication. Use as a penetrating oil or in situations where you don't want a wet film that will collect dust or the stickiness of grease or oil.
LPS 2: Heavier than LPS 1. Non-drying. Also will act as a penetrating oil to a lesser degree. Common for use on flight control bearings, etc. Don't use it on something like seat rollers unless you thoroughly wipe up any excess.
LPS 3: Heavier yet. Mostly used for corrosion proofing and sealing. Has some lubricating properties, but tends to dry fairly quickly to a non-flowing waxy film. Can use it on exposed flight control bearings to reduce water incursion after lubricating with LPS 2.

Re: Grease
Thank you. Very useful information. Guess it's time to take this tailwheel apart hoping I can figure out how it goes back together again

The Aviation Museum at the Langley Municipal Airport is a Shell distributor.
You can buy individual tubes of grease right off the rack in the gift shop.

Re: Grease
If the spec called for is mil-g-81322, I would use mobil grease 28, aeroshell 22 does not seem to react well with moisture and cold temps, it tends to dry up and get waxy once met with either cold or moisture. Or Mobil shc100 for wheel bearings, that stuff is awesome, but I am unsure what mil spec it fits off the top of my head.
Re: Grease
Well that's the problem, I don't know what spec a scott tailwheel has

See, there's the problem. If you would move into the 21st century and fly a tricycle aircraft instead of messing around with a tailwheel......ahramin wrote:Well that's the problem, I don't know what spec a scott tailwheel has.

My mama doesn't know I fly airplanes. She thinks I have a respectable job playing piano in a whorehouse.Big Pistons Forever wrote:I hope your mama didn't hear that !
