Galiano Island Float Plane Incident
VANCOUVER – Two men are OK after the float plane they were in crashed off Galiano Island Monday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the Ganges Coast Guard on Saltspring Island says the owner and co-pilot of Ocean Air Floatplanes were in the plane performing a procedure when they had trouble during takeoff.
The float plane crashed near Montague Harbour on Galiano Island.
Both men in the plane were ejected. They were able to keep afloat by clinging to the plane in the water and were not injured in the incident.
They have both been rescued.

Keeping in mind that a news reporter wrote that article..... They tend to use imaginative terminology to add to the "newsworthiness" of a story in which they may know little about.

Don't you know? All planes have ejection seats. Just like that RAF Lockheed CF-88 that plunged in Lethbridge a few years ago.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Hopefully he can get another airplane soon so he does not lose to much income.
The main thing is no one was injured, airplanes can be fixed or replaced.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

It happens. I've seen people ejected out of a cockpit as a result of a crash... not a pretty sight

Glad to hear that both are safe and unhurt!
Sucks about the 'plane, though - she looked in really nice shape, especially with the new floats..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Re: Galiano Island Float Plane Incident
Sad to see, but very glad nobody was hurt. The pilot was a very well regarded individual who was able to make an owner-operator service work over the long term. I guess the downside of lots of float training is all the extra water work as it increases the odds you are going to hit something you never saw.

Re: Galiano Island Float Plane Incident
Thanks for the kind words everyone -- not a scratch, ache or bruise on either of us. We did what we are trained to do, door open, grab hold of the air-frame, seat belt off and out. We did not need to inflate our life jackets and were not 'ejected' either. The plane was right side up, did not flip over and we not difficult to egress. But, man, it all happened very fast on the most unassuming day.

Really, really sorry to hear about GYVA, but so glad both are ok. That aeroplane and Dave was one of the best flying decisions I made 4 years ago. Hope you find a way to keep going...

A good lesson for everybody. It can happen to anybody, in the blink of an eye.

Well I certainly wouldn't be where I am today without Dave and GYVA, I'm glad Dave and the Student are alright.

Dave, any insight into what happened? Anything you can put a finger on?
Glad it had a 'happy' ending; an opportunity to buy a new airplane? All the best!

Looks like they struck an object in the water.

Re: Galiano Island Float Plane Incident
I'm confused by this statement, vs what the CADORS says and the photo above indicates:
Occurrence Summary
Date Entered:
2015-02-16
Narrative:
UPDATE: TSB Report#A15P0027: The pilot of the Cessna 180H floatplane, C-GYVA, and a student were practising emergency procedures when, on approach to land in the channel between Parker Island and Montague Harbour at Galiano Island, the floatplane landed hard and the left side fiberglass float fractured; it took on water immediately, rolled left and became inverted. The two occupants were wearing personal flotation devices, they did not activate these and egressed uninjured. They were on top of the floats by the time the aircraft became inverted. The aircraft was equipped with 4 point harnesses, and the pilot had received water immersion 'dunker' training. A local couple assisted with their boat before the Coast Guard arrived on scene. The aircraft was towed to the North end of Parker Island.
In any case, good job getting out so smoothly. It's not something I would consider easy, even in the controlled conditions of egress training, nevermind under the effects of post-crash shock and adrenaline.
Were you able to get out before it finished rolling inverted?cessnafloatflyer wrote:The plane was right side up, did not flip over and we not difficult to egress.

Re: Galiano Island Float Plane Incident
Whether boating or seaplane flying in the Winter, I have found the huge tides combined with heavy rainfall dislodge all manner of nasty, floaty & worse "neutrally buoyant" obstacles to make things more interesting... ie: DANGEROUS...
Thanks for emphasizing the egress thing Dave... & glad you guys were unhurt.
