Numb feelings at Air Canada's dart board hiring!

Post by ... »

I just thought I'd start a new thread. Just because

I think the message being conveyed by the aviation community in Canada is one of joy that AC is hiring again, with mixed with feelings of disappointment.

I do feel for those that aspire to reach the final reward biscuit of proudly stepping into the flight deck of a mint green European aircraft. After many years of putting up with crap jobs, crap pay and crappy towns. Being displaced from family & friends. Missing out on important occasions & family functions would all be worth it if the 'order' of things were done in the appropriate manner of 'evolution' in of finally attaining the ultimate ‘perceived’ prize of ‘Rolley-bags’ and ‘ding for coffee’ lifestyle.

However, as we all know too well, what happens to be a few examples of ‘low-timers’ getting the Celine Dion call to “We can fly together” (or however the song goes) I personally know of 2 people that did get the call that are not the usual candidates one would expect of AC’s based on past hiring practices.

I do feel for those that expected to get the AC call in the order of evolution & progression in the Canadian industry and did not. I feel your frustrations when you work next to a pilot that does not have the time to move into the left seat of a small turbine you are Captain of due to them being short on MPIC time…and gets a hire date. OR even possessing and ATPL.

However…as hard as it is, try to shake it off.
Does it make sense? No.
Is there and opportunity to be bitter because of this? Yes.

There are a thousand ‘feel good’ proverbs that would make your frustration a little more palatable. Believe me…if I hear one more person say to me “it is what it is” I’m going to sit up on a tower, wearing nothing but diapers and a lamp shade on my head and randomly pick off those that come across my scope!!! (Tune into CNN & CBC & CTV networks)!!

It does not make sense. What is AC doing…..who firking knows? However, the dart board theory seems to be taking place here.

It’s wrong, it’s not fair…..but it is…what it is.

Well Birddog, I don't know if that was a message of encouragement or not. If it was, it was a valiant try but it didn't work. Unfortunately I'm still a little bitter and resentful. I've worked my way up, been poor (still am....) and yada, yada, yada.... You know all too well how it goes.... I see myself as an excellent candidate to get a least a phone call but I may as well not even have a phone! Then again, maybe they'll call tommorow.... Or maybe (probably) not. Sigh....

Man the hiring is just starting - everyone is bent out of shape after 1 or 2 classes - not everyone can fit into a class. Yes i know every number counts but relax. they may be running classes straight for the next 3-4 years. have a beer try to keep your mind off it - the stress will kill u.

Yeah I know.... It's just this "young newbie" thing, the trend towards the 20 somethings getting priority. If it's true mind you.... It's hard to know what to believe.

We'll If I'm too old for AC, I'm not too old for your suggestion!!! TO THE FRIDGE!

I love how everybody's scrambling to get hired for 15 years of being right seat meat at AC and WJ. What's all the fuss about? You sit there and watch a machine do what you used to do, only better, get paid substantially less than the old guys you're replacing, then by the time the new 20 somethings hit retirement age, pilot's on large airliners won't even be in the machine...

Is walking through the terminal builidng with your hat and pull-bag THAT gratifying?

No not really..........but I am enjoying the six figure salary, having had the opportunity to fly around the world, continued training and so far, four additional endorsements to my licence, not to mention disability insurance, dental and prescription along with pass travel and reciprocal with just about every major airline in the world. A schedule that I can somewhat tailor to my changing personal monthly desires as well as 6 weeks vacation a year instead of two. Yeah, it really sucks but I love the hat.

Hey Jaques Strappe.

It is quite obvious you qualified yourself, worked hard and kept at it. Enjoy the 6 figures that you take home as well as the associated perks because when people put effort instead of bitching, the rewards are there including your hard earned pension. I am tired of the whiners….. 8)

Dude,

usually I'm right with ya, but stooping to this level to defend the job just sounds...defensive. Not to mention a bit grating to those still grinding it out in GA. Good for you, really, but it's akin to bragging about winning the lottery. We've all bought tickets, but not every one will win.

Yeah, AC pilots are a pretty proud bunch ... they're especially proud that they recently were able to torpedo the purchase of new aircraft from Boeing. Hey, great going, guys, that union hat looks real good on ya

If you think everything is coming up roses at Scare Canada, look around some more. Their extraordinarily high labour costs (referred to here as "winning the lottery") cripple their competitiveness.

Besides, would you want to work someplace that has Celine Dion as their marketing representative? Barf ...

Yeah I thought about that as I was writing it, however I have grated it out in GA, worked hard and made the moves I needed to make to get to where I wanted to be. My retort is not a grate towards those who are doing what I was doing 15 years ago, but rather a retort to the whiners.

As for winning the lottery, I have to disagree a little. I mean yes the odds are against you from the beginning. I was told that only 2% of the pilot pool would make it to a major airline when I started. Those who want it will make it happen.

On this website however, I see so many guys with nothing better to do than bitch, whine, complain and generally perpetrate completely inaccurate information. These guys will probably not make it and simply want everyone else to join them in their misery. Misery loves company.

I mean Air Canada has just hired 32 pilots in the last 6 weeks. How much bandwidth was taken up by guys upset that they didn't get a call yet? Many of these guys are also posting that AC doesn't pay enough which begs the question " then why are you upset that they haven't called? " I think people just like to bitch and hey it is a free country but for those who want it, it is a great lifestyle. Maybe not as romantic as it was back in the "old days" but it is what you make it.

As for AC pilots being a proud bunch, well I guess thats a bad thing. I am proud. I am proud to be a pilot. Obtaining my commercial license was a very proud day for me followed by the day I brought home the nice crisp ATPL.

Maybe if there was a little more pride in our profession, we would have a profession to be proud of.
