Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
Hi All,
I'm looking for some information on Pilot/Aircraft Bases for Canadian North and First Air (Or any Northern 705 Operator). Other half has job opportunities in Northern Canada and I've had a hard time finding any solid information on this. Working conditions and schedules would also be helpful. Feel free to private message if you don't feel comfortable posting, any information is appreciated.
Cheers

Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
For 7f, the entry aircraft will be the ATR. It's a very senior company, slow movements across the board.
Either full time in YZF with 10 GDO's per month, awesome for the guys having families, or rotational 2 weeks on 2 weeks off out of YFB.
50k first year for YFB, a bit more for YZF due to northern allowances.
As for 5T, you might want to look elsewhere with this 50$ oïl environment as they issued a lot of layoff notices recently, but FICU or Tbalyx will be the forum members to ask about 5T.
Enjoy

Not sure what you consider northern canada but Calm Air is hiring and they have a Thompson and Winnipeg base.
Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
Air North in Whitehorse.
Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
Canadian North has two pilot bases, Edmonton and Calgary. We have a pseudo "port" system for the Dash 8 crews to allow some of them to work out of Ottawa and Yellowknife. I wouldn't count on either of those however.
The Dash8 crews have 8 days rotations up in YFB from the Edmonton base, so you could possibly live there as well and make it work.
As mentioned above, we have pilots on layoff at the moment due to a reduction in oil sands related charter work so I wouldn't count on seeing any hiring here for at least the remainder of 2015.

To clarify, no pilot layoffs have been issued at 5t as of yet.

Thats great news for the pilots at 5T... better than the doom and gloom from a month or so back.....
How is 7F doing since getting rid of the hercs, any word of layoffs there?

What about the fact Summit has started doing some of their 737 flying, and will soon be doing all their western canada work?Kosiw wrote:How is 7F doing since getting rid of the hercs, any word of layoffs there?
Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
I have heard First Air will be taking over the KFC YQT-YWG run with the ATR. Will this mean we will see a First Air YQT Base open up with the ATR?
Fake it till you make it.

Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
Thanks all for the information and replies.
I was wondering if First Air hires any direct entry FO's on the 37 and if not what is usually the progression.
Do they usually put guys FO ATR, CAP ATR, then FO 37. Or do they take guys from the right seat on the ATR with time and put them right seat on the 37?
Also if anyone has any ideas on time flow for First Air operations, in particular the YOW/YFB ops.
Thanks again and feel free to private message if you feel more comfortable,
Cheers

Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
With respect to First Air's rotational gig out of YOW, how many days off can you actually expect? Do you do training in your on or off time? Do they stick to a pretty consistent two weeks on two weeks off, or does the schedule shift around a bunch due to training, company needs, etc...
Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
The rotation for 7F is a constant 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. We have an exemption that allows us to fly the day we come in and the day we go out which is actually the 15th day. There are other restrictions to this but as a result they can't really mess with the schedule. We have guys who have had the same rotation for years.
Generally the training is when off rotation but it is compensated somewhat.
Good gig as rotations go. The accomodations are good in YFB.

Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
Where is the ATR sim done?
Also, do 7F people get ID 90 or Zeds, since many who rotate dont live in YOW.

Sim YYZ.
ZED with AC, WJ, Porter
Reciprocal JS with AC Jazz, Sky reg WJ Porter Transat and a few US Airlines.
Very solid contract, by far the best turboprop gig in the airline industry in Canada. It's the best pay in town now, when it USED to be Jazz.

What happened to the 7F, ZF/EG 737 crews now that Summit has taken over the western jet skeds?

Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
We're still here, getting paid to sit on reserve for the time being. Surely won't last long though.....
Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
Are you thinking there will be layoffs, or an increase in 737 flying to get you guys working again?

Re: Canadian North / First Air Pilot & Aircraft Bases
^ As I understand it we're hiring an FO onto the dash as they tried to recall 5 or so from layoff, and only 4 came back. That being said, there's about 130 or so pilots on the seniority list, with about 105 active. Definitely a change from the end of 2014 when there was 170+. I can't see those pilots coming back based on the fact most have already gone Capt at Encore/Jazz. Glory days over.
The new sched flying is about the only good news we've had since Pharrell Williams and Katey Perry were #1 and 2. Standby for more regarding NTCL. No clue how that will turn out.
Even if oil comes back, with all the competition for flying into the oil sands, it's gonna be a tough turnaround. I have indeed.ca bookmarked.
