Hi All

I'm currently taking the Harv's air online ground school because I don't have time to attend ground school at the club. Im studying to write my PPL exam. So far the course is good, aside from the instructors crappy jokes. I did my REC several years ago and I fly regularly but I've always wanted to upgrade to Private. My question is, is the PPL exam heavy on VOR and ADF questions? Also are there a lot of performance chart questions? When i did my written for my Rec I bombed Nav and had to re-write it. I did well the second time around but that was years ago. Now that i have to write the PPL and nervous as Mike Duffy before expense auditing. Any tips to calm my nerves and what I should expect for the Nav section would be appreciated. Also any extra resource would also be appreciated.

PPL is all about chart-reading and dead reckoning, so the exam is not heavy on VOR/ADF questions, but there might be a couple, so don't take chances and know how they work. You'll get a couple of points on the exam and, more importantly, you'll know how to use them in real life should you ever need them. If you can't figure them out with a pen and paper and no distractions in an exam room, you for sure won't be able to use them in the air - and why would you want to rob yourself of extra navigational aids?

Performance charts; yes, there are performance charts. You better know them; again, both for the test and for actual real-life flying. The good thing about performance charts is that there is not a lot of memorization involved with them: take the time to actually understand them, and then they'll be a piece of cake.

I've consistently noticed mostly 1, rarely 2 RadioNav questions on the tests of my students. Mostly just VOR radial or NDB BTS/BFS type of questions. nothing too complicated!

Best tip I can give is to time your exam properly. I've had at least 2-3 students in the last one year who should have just walked right through the test take most of their time in Air Law, Gen and Met and finally arrive at Nav with about 15-20 minutes to spare. That does not help you at all!!! Make sure you move on and come back to any question that takes you more than a couple of minutes...

If you can go through every single quiz and practice exam from PilotTraining.ca then you should be able to breeze through the TC exams!

I also used Harv's air online ground school and received my recommend.
I will be hiring my instructor this week for a couple of hours for navigation.
