Logging time for CPL

Post by shurshot17 »

Im currently working on my degree in BC, as well as working toward my CPL. During the summers I go back to the prairies to work, I plan on building PIC X/C time at my local airport in SK, is there anything special I need to do to make the hours count toward my CPL? I was told the flight school needs to certify the time in my log book, however, the only person who has ever written in my log book, is me. For my PPL and night rating, no instructor ever wrote in my log book.

Any help would be appreciated

Just make sure you log the times in your PTR and the applicable hours are met for the CPL license when sending in your application for the license.

They may not require a cert in your logbook, but I knew different folks who would just ask the Chief Pilot/CFI to certify their hours after doing a chunk of time like that. They just write a line that says something along the lines of "I certify all times flown herein with xx club are correct" and sign and date it. It could also be the Manager or other management figure - anyone who can verify that what you flew was correctly logged.

Requirements are: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... m#421_30_4

There's no requirement for PIC X/C training time other than your 300NM X/C.

You do, however need to get the following in your PTR:
(B) 30 hours solo flight time including:
(I) 25 hours solo flight time emphasizing the improvement of general flying skills of the applicant which shall include a cross-country flight to a point of a minimum of 300 nautical mile radius from the point of departure and shall include a minimum of 3 landings at points other than that of departure; and
(II) 5 hours solo flight time by night during which a minimum of 10 takeoffs, circuits and landings were completed.

The spirit of the law is that you should be practising CPL exercises during this 30hr solo flight time, thus you *should* be working with an instructor for this time. Here "working with" is a relative term that at the end of the day means your instructor is ok with you adding this time to your PTR and that they would be comfortable telling TC that you were practising.

You do need to have at least 20 hour of X/C PIC as part of the experience requirement, but they don't have to be a part of your CPL training per se, just time building. I think that many instructors will only be willing to certify time that you have flown under their supervision (i.e. dual or "supervised solo" time, meaning you informed them beforehand that you were going to be doing a solo flight to practice specific exercises). The hours that you write into your logbook while time building can be certified by you, since you have a PPL. Just sign at the bottom of the page in the logbook.

The only X/C time that is required to be a part of your CPL training is the 5 hours of dual.

65 hours of your flight time must be under supervision of a flight instructor, including 30 hours of PIC time. Essentially an instructor should sign off on your PTR saying that your flight times were supervised. This includes your 300 NM cross country with 2 intermediate full stop landings.

PS: Quick note. Guess what TC loves to do? Check if your 300 NM was at least 301 NM in a straight line or as the crow flies (I sure hope a crow has that much endurance!)

Great points here so far but one thing I have noticed with all of my friends is that they are shy on their ATPL requirements. I know it seems crazy to already be thinking about it without your CPL even but your build up time is the absolute perfect opportunity to get the 25 hours of night XC PIC that you will eventually require.

That is an excellent thing to think about. One of the hardest things to get towards your ATPL requirements is the 100 Night PIC and 25 Night X/C-PIC. Might be a good idea to try and get as much towards that as possible. Another number hard to get to is the 75 hours of instrument time. Only 25 hours can be logged on the sim. The rest must come from airplane or heli time. If you think IMC flying helps, try asking around on the forums how much IMC time that pilots get in an average flight? I've heard times as low as 5-6 minutes each flight.. So its a good idea you are thinking of your ATPL!

The reason I asked, I meet the CPL requirements, im just building toward the 50 PIC x/c for my IFR rating. Do those hours need to be certified or no?

For the purposes of the IFR rating, you just need to prove that those hours are real. They don't need to be training hours (and don't need to be in a ptr).
