Trading Places: 2015.

It’s starting to feel a lot like Air Canada over at WestJet Airlines Ltd. — or maybe it’s the other way around.

For years, the stereotype was that WestJet’s non-unionized workforce was happy and engaged, telling bad jokes during flights and living up to the familiar slogan, “owners care.” Meanwhile, over at Air Canada, the unionized employees were bitter and rude, often threatening to strike if their demands weren’t met.
What a difference a few years makes.

It really is remarkable how quickly the game changes.

I wouldn't consider a 10 year agreement shoved down AC pilots throats "labour peace".

Pretty sure they voted it in, also if it doesn't go the way they had planned there is opt out options?

Wasn't shoved down anyone's throat. Was voted on and passed. Actually a collection of 3 successive contracts where wages, & pensions are guaranteed through each round. Options to negotiate other conditions every 3 years, or pull out of the deal completely.

You're correct, but what the company put forward in new cash compensation (2% increases, one time bonus) they got back tenfold in the erosion of scope. But hey, under this Harper regime the bargaining power is basically gone.

The thread wasn't really intended for hard-done-by AC pilots to bicker about the nuances of their agreement. Not that they ever miss a chance to do so lol.

The article - which of course, no one read, because reading is hard - simply comments on the fact that the AC at least has agreements in place, where WestJet has rumblings of labour discontent complete with a union drive. Arguably, a complete reversal from recent past.

But hey, it's easier just to read the headline, right?

UAL had labor peace in the late 90's when they signed fat contracts with everyone and promised the pilots growth growth and more growth to buy some labor stability.

Turns out, as time progressed and a Chapter 11 filing, the contracts were suitable for wrapping fish.

But management made off like bandits....

Are you implying that UAL management was in on the 911 conspiracy that triggered one of the biggest down turns in aviation history? Or just pointing out the completely different laws surrounding corporate bankruptcy filings between Canada and the USA?

UAL was headed into the toilet well prior to 9/11.
