Taking PSTAR at 4900 Yonge Street
Just completing my re-certification for my PPL (had been out of flying for 15 years).
I've completed all my airwork at YTZ, just 4.9 hours which I thought was pretty good considering the time off. My instructor says I'm up to PPL standard. But now I need to take a PSTAR test AND Island Air will administer the written PPL exam or parts of it (I'm a little vague on that requirement to get re-certified).
On the PSTAR, I've been told I can write it at 4900 Yonge. Did a quick Google search, didn't find any info. Can anyone clarify:
1. Where, when and procedure to book PSTAR at 4900 Yonge St., Toronto
2. Is there a "best" single source to study for PSTAR (maybe the CARs)
3. I know I need 90% to pass, if I don't get 90%, is there a waiting period to re-write, or maximum number of times to write
Thanks everyone.

Every single PSTAR question you can possibly encounter is published (i.e. the entire question bank), so study the test, not the materials. I didn't have to write the PSTAR at TC; I just had it supervised by the instructor. (I don't know if going to TC is a requirement, as my "instructor" was also a TC inspector.)
You don't need to write the PPL written again, but you should review for your own benefit.
Make sure you have this logged in your log book in case it ever comes up. No actual paperwork goes to TC afterwards.

You don't need a "written PPL exam or parts of it" - but you will need to satisfy your instructor that you reach the PPL standard for the ground portion of the PPL flight test which includes exercise 23a (https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/ ... 2471.htm#A) which is planning a two-leg cross-country trip on an assigned route.harry_fine wrote: But now I need to take a PSTAR test AND Island Air will administer the written PPL exam or parts of it (I'm a little vague on that requirement to get re-certified)..
He or she should also test you on exercise 2 (https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/ ... 2-2469.htm) which is examined on the ground, not in the air.
Information about the PSTAR is available here:
https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/ ... ral-81.htm including the full set of 200 questions from which you will be required to answer 50. However they don't give you the correct answers, you have to find those on your own.
On that page it states:
"Certain flight training units will be authorized by Transport Canada to develop and administer the PSTAR examination for Student Pilot Permit applicants, and military and foreign applicants for the Private Pilot Licence. The examination may also be written at Transport Canada Regional offices."
You should be able to sit the PSTAR at your flight school, but if for some reason you prefer not to then yes it is available at the Transport Canada Regional Office at 4900 Yonge Street.
Contact details for the office are here: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/ontario/menu.htm#ca_toronto
I believe that the exam room there is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings - last entry at 12 noon. You don't usually need to book. I'm sure a telephone call on the number listed on the TC web page will provide the most up to date information.
The Buttonville TC office also has an exam room, if that's a more convenient location for you.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.

Are you sure you don't have that the wrong way round
You should be sitting the pstar at island air. And the ppl exam at yonge street.
I trained there so know for a fact that you can sit the pstar at the school

No, I CAN do the PSTAR at Island Air, but I can also do it at TC. The private pilot exam does not have to be written, but as someone above (thank you) explained, the instructor is required to satisfy himself that I'm up to the standard on the ground portion.omgwereallgoingtodie wrote:Are you sure you don't have that the wrong way round

I'm also thinking about renewing my expired (12 yrs) PPL.harry_fine wrote:Just completing my re-certification for my PPL (had been out of flying for 15 years).

Did your flight-review (a.k.a "flight test") take 4.9 hrs ?
Or was some part of that review / (re) instruction ?
I know way back when I took my flight test, it was only ~ 2 hours (1.7 according to my log book

You mentioned in another post that you'd been keeping active as an "enthusiast".
Did that happen to mean you use flight simulator software ?
