Why is that once some make it to the airlines they become such dicks? No matter what the topic they seem to think they are experts at it all.

Edited to exclude those who don't!

I doubt it has anything to do with being airline pilots. They were probably experts long before they got hired by an airline.

Why is it someone makes sweeping statements about a large group of people due to their experience(s) with the few 'dicks'?

Those of you who THINK you know it all, are becoming a real problem for those of us who do...

I have to agree that a lot of pilots are being painted with the same brush. If anything, I think a lot more pilots in the little league are know it all dicks.....but that's just me. Most of the airline pilots I know have mellowed out by the time they have gotten here. Anyway....that's the way I see it.

Its funny to fly with different people and see their quirks. I think pilots are a breed in general that think they know it all. Anything anyone does is the right thing, otherwise they wouldnt do it. Obviously none of us would intentionally do the wrong thing.

Ever done something according to the SOPs and have some captain give you shit over it? "You shouldn't do it that way!" Some people need to relax. Not so long ago Id look up to a high time pilot (or not so high time in the case of initial instructors) and take what they'd say as the word of god. Now, I know better.

You remember the guys in commercial ground school that answered every question in class even if they were wrong? As Cat Driver put it in another post.
an idiot with 500 hours is a 500 hour idiot when he reaches 5000 hours he will be a 5000 hour idiot.
Andrew.

I am the best pilot in the world because I am "TOP GUN" at Sault College.

With over 100 hours of flight time, I will join AC in no time after graduating.

As a matter of fact, I do answer the questions in class all of the time- because I am the best. Even my wrong answers are better than the instructors' correct ones.

What do they know? If they were smart, they'd fly jets, just like I will , as soon as I graduate.

Once again, there is no pilot in the world better than me. I can't wait until I graduate, then I'll never-EVER fly a piston plane again.

Try sitting around with a group of Paramedics and see if you can get a word in edgewise on any issue that may come up over coffee.
This ones a poor medic, that one is a bad driver, the one over there is so up the bosses whoop sa daisy that he smells bile. You guys just think it is only you because that is what you know.

Bandaid, you seem like one of the good guys, so no offence to your profession and I realize there are some asshole pilots out there, but lets not get me started on paramedics!!

I think airline pilots act like they are King shit from Turd Island because they are. Corporate jet jockeys can be the same way. They have a certain AIR about them. It is called professional pride. It is the attitude that I am a professional and I expect to be treated like a professional. It comes not from a holier than thou attitude but rather a sense of accomplishment and pride in their profession, confidence in their abilities. I have learned, I will continue to learn, I will constantly strive to be the best that I can be. I whole heartedly endorse and encourage this attitude because everyone is a winner, except the poor consumer who may eventually will have to face higher costs. Everone spouts off about Jetsgo with their $30,000 bond or pay for training except that there does not seem to be any comments from pilots who actually sat in the Chief Pilot's office and saw, in writing, the contract. I may hazard a guess that the contract is two sided. If you do this for me, I will do this for you. Pilots have to make a commitment. Somebody talked about Kelowna Flightcraft on another thread and they are a mostly cargo carrier. But they are not the traditional old freight dogs flying clapped out old freighters. They are an airline that just happens to transport boxes rather than people. (in what used to be clapped out old airliners that are now freighters.) I have many friends who were freight dogs and are now airline pilots and the transition is quite remarkable. The only fly in the ointment that I can see are pilots are willing to put up with shit from employers just to feed an addiction called flying and there are unprincipled air operators that will take advantage of that. If we all stood united and said no, who is going to fly their airplanes. Are the unprincipaled air operators going to have to change?. They will if they have to but there are always pilots who are willing. May have to look overseas, but. We have an unprincipaled air operator here in Vancouver who is in shit up to his eyebrows for some of the things he did. Just ask DA900. DA900 refused to kertow and bust the rules, as any pro should and did what was the proper thing. Dumped him and let the summabitch find some other shmuck to fly his airplane. DA900 has his pride, his reputation and his professional attitude intact and Doma is out of business. Listen to these consumate professionals, maybe you will learn somehing. It is a lot like our friends just south of us. They act like they are the best, probibally because they are the best. We can be also.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Thanks Ireton,
For two reasons, the compliment and not getting started about paramedics. You see what I did was paint all the paramedics with the same brush, sort of what is going on here. The truth is I work with alot of first class guys and gals and yes a few of the others. Funny how the few outnumber the many and are the only ones you remember.

Let me clarify. First off I don't dispute a thing that oldtimer says, when some with a ton of experience flying tells me something related to flying I listen keenly. I am in no position to tell someone with much more experience than myself how it should be done. What I meant by instant experts is these guys that figure they know more than doctors, or universities that have done a paramount of research on a certain issue. Funny how just because they drive an airliner they become experts in every subject. Wow, that sim training must really be a bitch. Engine fire drills while doing world economics and switching to nuclear physics all in the course of a hour session.

Best part of all is that they are so arrogant they won't even take the time to examine the proof. Then again they spent a couple of years at the community college level so I guess they're PHD's in everything.

There are phrases that come to mind when talking about holier than thow attitudes.

1. my sh?t don't stink.
2. I'm to good for this
3. I didn't spend $60,000.00 to be doing this.
4. Hi I'm a pilot are you impressed.
5. being a professional etc. etc.

as a group we are as good as our last screw up that hits the papers. only bad news seems to be interesting.

I like to remember how it was when I started and then nice things that were done for me and pass some of the good on. Sometimes my ass gets bit but most of the time it's rewarding.

Aspilots we enjoy a certain feeling no matter how miserable the situation. I think of my grandparents and how long it took them to travel. Horse and cart for real. Now I jump into a nice airplane and go over 200 K in cloud with few restrictions. I mean we are blessed with this experience why ruin it with attitude.

Just finished a trip to North Carolina from Kingston in the worst weather I'm still smiling what a rush. If we fly we have no right to be as?h?les. besides if you don't like it just say no.

N2,

they're experts because of all the free time they have to read while at altitude
