Re: Air ambulance medics federally regulated
This is absolutely insane. An airplane, pilots, and respective crews are federal..yes. They are federally regulated and work according so. A pilot, can fly an aircradt In ontario just as easily as he/she can in manitoba, Saskatchewan, BC or any other province in Canada. I could get a job tommorow out east in Newfoundland and start work that night. A pilot, being FEDERaL can even go into the states, and after faa equivalency certifications, fly an aircraft in command there. Now let's talk about paramedics...let's say we have a fligjt paramedic based in ontario. If that medic goes to winnipeg for example, he can not act as the primary medic in charge of that patient! That's why if you ever watch Ornge oR any other ontario carrier at an out of province airport, they can not go in to the hospital with that patient or bring one out to the plane. They MUsT hand off or have that provinces paramedic be with them at all times, and that medic must be the primary medic attending. This is becUse medics are provincially regulated! How much more black and white can it be? An Ontario flight medic cannot go into the states and start caring for a patient, as this is well outside of there provincial scope. I realize there are pricste medivacs and whatnot that void many rules yes, But a fligjt medic in ontario, is able to care for a patient in Ontario. End of story. The only thing that is federal about them is they are sitting in my seat on my federally regualated airplane.

Paramedics are provincially regulated and will remain as such until there is a federal body to administer their qualifications.

Re: Air ambulance medics federally regulated
What is the issue here - is it just me or are people over complicating this. Just because the medics are restricted on where they can work there is no reason for them not to be subject to the union. If they are employed by the airline and fall under the scope of that definition supplied to who is and who is not a union employee and they qualify then it's simple auto cheque off. Now they can choose not to join but their dues are deducted at source, no option except to redirect the dues to a charity. Why not get proactive and make sure they are involved in the negotiations and get "their" clause to pay and working conditions in the collective agreement. Just because the medics are provincially licensed their rules of employment are federal.
