Have you ever thought about starting an airline? Since childhood, I have dreamed of owning and managing a huge airline, which connects countries and continents. Once I got up and decided that it will be crime if I don`t carry my reverie out (so far on paper). After that morning I started my project, which, doubtless, will be transformed into life. I`m absolutely sure, that one day you will take your seat in the airplane belonging to my airline. https://omskavia.wordpress.com/
I`ll be happy to get interesting comments and offers.
Airlines do fuel hedging. The $7.30/gal that you quoted from flightaware in ORD is the retail price for visiting private aircraft. Major airlines have a much lower cost because they purchase in bulk, and thus get a bulk price. (My guess is about 50% of that quoted price)
Thank you for comment!
Now I'm writing the next part where I explore the financial annual of American Airlines. There I found the more real fuel price. It's $2.91. I'll analyze this annual with details. It's more than 300 pages, so I spend a lot of time, but it's like a book about aviation industry in the US.
DrSpaceman, later I will compare US and Canadian markets, also I`ll explore Canadian taxes and fares connected to aircraft sphere.
Here I hope to get useful comments or offers. It`s not a project for somebody. It`s the progressive realization of a dream.

Horrible businesses ---
I used to think that too.
I am now however starting to wonder if the "Oracle of Omaha" needs to update his thinking on the airline business.
No, he doesn't. Airlines are horrible businesses.
That is because of the power in the industry that goes to manufacturers and leasing companies, and airport operators. After what they take from the income stream, there's nothing left.
As for the OP, if you don't have enough money to hire an expert to answer these questions, you certainly don't have enough money to start an airline.

Good judgment comes from experience. Experience often comes from bad judgment.

If you want to make a million dollars in aviation ,start with ten million dollars and you will soon have one
Most business plans that are reliant on the "Bums in Seats" scenario are subject to the "same whims and follies " of the customer. Know your customer and the rest is easy.
That is all the free advice you will get from me .The next will cost you many beers, as I am well paid for my aviation opinions now
Omska?

What are you going to do?
2R, my aim is not to be billionare. I`m fan of aviation and I would like to start an airline because I like it. Of course, don`t forget about profit, but e.g Delta earns $50 from each passenger on the route, I will collect $10. It`s just an example. I understand that some routes are unprofitable and airline has to find a balance between ticket prices on different routes. esp803, would you like to work as a creative director in my airline?
The 6th part of my research is dedicated to Alaska Airlines. It consists of not only bored financial indicators, but also of wages and salaries of employees. Moreover, you`ll find out how much does airline spend on food and beverages. My post is delayed because I have been waiting for the answer of Alaska Airlines. https://omskavia.wordpress.com/2016/02/ ... -airlines/
The 7th part of my research consists of analysys of Spirit Airlines annual report. After reading you will know everything about Spirit Airlines, e.g. we will find out why do Spirit operates Airbus family. In addition, there`re interesting facts about average airlines`s salaries and wages.
To be honesst, this part is quite boring, but it`s necessary. The next part (in a few days) will be “Test Flight”, where I will explore different routes and compare the prices. You can offer me desirable routes.
The 8th part of my research consists of exploring prices on different routes, such as JFK-SFO, JFK-LAX, JFK-SEA, SEA-MIA, LAX-ANC. I tried to compare all information which I found out to calculate the real prices. https://omskavia.wordpress.com/2016/03/ ... st-flight/
