How much of that ticket price are the airport improvement fees and security surcharge (about $150)? I'd also suggest looking at a map, the block time between YOW-YVR is 5:43. Canadians are actually quite fortunate to have 2 carriers competing on such a sparse route. Try and find a cheaper direct flight between Madrid and Moscow which are both larger cities and slightly closer geographically.

Personally I love your Communist/socialist money grabbing government fees.
It means 85% of the population that live a few hour drive from the US border, chooses to drive to a US airport and take US flights.
Albeit, the CDN-US $ is really weak, so as of late we don't see the mass of Canadian pax on our birds.

Ogdensburg, NY airport expansion is currently underway. Maybe one of the major US carriers will start operating out of there and you can fly with them for less to Seattle, which is two hours by car south of Vancouver.
