Post by kilomike_19 »

Hi !

I'm wondering if an humble aviatior can give me some information about the state of the teeth of a pilot holding a Class I medical check.

Thanks

I would imagine, if it were to become an issue, the deciding factor would be, "does it stop you from safely operating a plane, or could it?" That said, as far as I recall, I haven't been asked about it on any of my medicals thus far. A bigger problem could be getting through any sort of interview if your dental health is worse than the stereotypical redneck's would be.

You real want to look after your teeth, though. In the war they definitely included a dental check for people signing up to be airmen, and definitely required ALL cavities to be filled. I suppose it was different then, with unpressurized aeroplanes flying at great heights, but a few years ago, after I had some dental work done, I went to work and experienced a moment of blinding pain as the filling I'd just gotten exploded. Well, it didn't really "explode" but it popped out with enough force to cause a lot of pain as some trapped gas pocket in the tooth expanded.

Really, look after your teeth.

Dental health is a direct relation to your heart health.

What my Canadian friend said^^^
You don't want to go to war? Stop brushing your teeth.

I've never heard of anyone's dental health being such a concern to a CAME that it became an impediment. Hard to even imagine nowadays with dentists almost as common as Starbucks it seems. Way harder (in Canada at least) to find a family doctor.

Do you have teeth at all OP? I mean let's be honest here. There are certain aspects to this industry that would make having no teeth desirable. Getting ahead for instance.

Joking aside, I've never heard of it being an issue, but the urban myths out there about this business are rampant. I still meet people daily who didn't know pilots can wear glasses.
