What to do after School
Hey everyone,
This Spring I'll be graduating from the SkyWings/Red Deer College aviation diploma program at the age of 20. I'll have my CPL and Multi-IFR all completed with around 200 hours. I don't know where I should apply or what I should do once I graduate (go up north, instruct, etc.). I've spent around $60,000 so far to become a pilot and would like to actually fly, not work on the ramps. I have no problem helping out on the ramps, as long as my actual position is as a pilot. I have my Canadian and EU citizenship and am fluent in English and French. I don't care what kind of flying I'm doing, I just want to fly. Hopefully I'm not being too broad and you guys can help me out with some suggestions. Any help at all, about anything, would be really appreciated.
Thanks very much guys!

Re: What to do after School
Shaking head at 40et.
Anyways, word on the street is the goings good.
If your school has an agreement with Jazz or Georgian or some other 704/705 company I would take advantage of that.
If not, focus on operations with light piston singles and twins (too many to list here). Being out of Red Deer there should be a few charter companies out of RD that hire lower time pilots. A visit to the office might be a good start.
If an instructor rating is affordable and you have the means to complete one over the winter, that might be a good option, but I think you are in a great position, 20 with CPL and all the low time fixings. Don't worry, just keep your ear to the ground.

You seem like a perfect fit for pole smoking.

Wow! That's pretty harsh. I guess you were born with a CPL and flight experience and you have never received any advice from older pilots.
Alister,
Network, Network, Network. Knock on doors and meet people in the industry. Patience and perseverance will see you to your goals.

What does that mean exactly?Network, Network, Network.
I am afraid that like ET, I am having a difficult time to offer a serious suggestion.
There is no magic solution. Lots and lots of threads with the same old question and answers, arguments and discussions.
Maybe start by researching them...

Trey Kule,
We all know that getting a job is about who you know, or more importantly who knows you. That's what I mean by network, Alister needs to meet people in the industry so when a spot for a low timer opens up he will be the one that either a friend or acquaintance says give this kid a shot. You are correct that there is no magic bullet to find that first job, we each have had to find our own way of doing that. For 40ET to ridicule a young kid and call him a pole smoker for coming on an aviation forum and asking for advice is asinine. It tells me far more about 40ET's character then the original post tells me about Alisters character, Alister is just a youngster who doesn't know what he doesn't know.
Alister PM me and I'll be happy to give you what advice I can, out of view of some of the curmudgeons on this site.
PS. I just saw that 40ET apologized for his comments.

Re: What to do after School
Well, to be honest, I have no idea what a pole smoker is, but I am guessing it is not a nice term.
And I dont really need to know.
if you read the many threads on here you will see the same questions and same advice and same arguments.
If networking just means meeting people why not just say that? I asked because I have had some very odd experiences over the years such as meeting a young pilot and having a chat with them in a lounge, and then getting a call a month later from a company advising me I had been used as a reference..true story, and I understand it is not an exclusive one. I do not give my business cards to pilots any more.
Now, if you had told him to show up with donuts...a whole different story...
Anyway, to the op. Use the search function. It will give you all sorts of good answers..
BTW.. We might all not know what you claim we all do. It is those kinds of claims that can lead a young pilot astray

Make a list of companies in your area/province/canada and drive around until you have a job. Meet people in person, ask for suggestions if they are not hiring at the moment and continue.alister wrote:Hey everyone,

Re: What to do after School
I wasn't directing my statement at a general audience, it was directed at you. That's why I wrote "Trey Kule" at the start of my post. Then when I changed to writing directly to Alister I made the distinction.trey kule wrote: BTW.. We might all not know what you claim we all do. As for using the term networking rather than just go out and meet people in the industry...well it's more concise.
Also, I realize that this topic has been covered before but this youngster took the time to ask a question, what's the harm in giving him an answer, or is there a forum rule against repetitive topics. The problem with searching the topic is you end up having to wade through numerous smart ass posts like 40ET's.

1) go back to school and get a useful degree.
2) get a real job that pays
3) $$$ profit
4) rent/buy a plane

Re: What to do after School
Whatever you do, remember you WILL need PIC time, and the sooner you can get it, the better. For some reason, kids these days don't seem to think it's important, but it is. Not only for career advancement, but actually learning and developing valuable flying and decision making skills. Don't end up as one of those stuck in the right seat of a 705 machine unable to get an ATPL and move on/move up. Try to get a PIC job (think 702/703 ops) right away. Failing that, try to get in the right seat at a company that has a fleet in which you'll eventually be able to go left seat (think 703/704 ops) to get that important time.
