I had an instructional background in the army so it was natural for me to move in the flight instruction role following my transition out of the military. Instructing was a great way to solidify the basics and it did land my first FO gig because of my TT (no ramp time).

The lower salary of instructing does get to you after a while [more so the unknown of what your next paycheck will say because you're at the mercy of the weather] and your life can easily become consumed by instructing (flying non-stop while the weather is good). I remember at one point I was at work ground briefing or flying for 22 days straight for about 10+ hours a day because the weather one summer was exceptionally good. It can become tiring - know your limits for yourself, your personal life, and ultimately for the quality of instruction given to your students.

After I moved to a 704 job, I maintained my Class 3 and my work schedule was flexible enough to freelance instruct at my base and stay well within my duty limitations. I hid nothing from the company, and even wrote in my freelance days in our duty program (Flight Duty XLS) so that I had a way of ensuring I was legal and able to fulfill my primary duty of flying for my company.

Freelancing was probably the most rewarding because I truly was my own boss, followed my own syllabus, and put my student through his first solo, PPL, night and VFR OTT ratings over the course of a year and a bit. He bought his own plane so I was "at arms length."
