University degree then aviation diploma vs local club?

Post by gopherblack »

Hi,

I'm almost about to complete my university degree while working on my PPL and then CPL with appropriate ratings. This way, doing my flying at a local club would help me complete my CPL in less time. However, when I look at colleges like seneca or okanagan, with their ties to bearskin and jazz, I wonder if it's better to just do PPL and hold off my training for a year and then apply for a college diploma. Will the diploma route be better or would it be redundant if I will already hold a BSc by then?

Its too late now for that , even if you get into these schools the chances of getting right to jazz is very minimal. to be honest its going to be a huge waste of money basically a gamble. you are far more likely to save that money & with the industry the way it is trying to get into a 703 operations after finishing your ratings or alternatively get instructor rating. to get some hours then move up the ladder like every one else. it wont take that long.

Again that is my opinion you are welcome to try to get into the program and see where it takes you .

cheers,

Pick the one that will get you done the fastest and for the least amount of money all said and done.

Don't worry about ties, except for the ones you'll wear to a interview.

I was in your position after I completed a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree from CarletonU. I reached out to Seneca, and they informed me that I will need to complete the first year of their program before they accept any transfer credits for my courses in aerodynamics, stability and control, etc. etc.

If you have BSc. and are willing to spend more time IN SCHOOL - I recommend you choose Western University as it is business management program which would be nice along side your science based degree. That degree also offers flight training.

If you want to fly for the airlines, and already have a degree, then I see getting another one as redundant, you only need the flying requirements at this point. Jazz is hiring pilots at 1000 hours these days, huge pilot shortage in the next few years, so you shouldn't worry. Basically comes down to how fast you want to finish.

Definitely. University programs these days are time table fillers with too much unpractical stuff, I'm sure you already know that from your undergrad experience, why go through it again if you can get a more enriched practical experience at a flying club. I personally think you would learn a lot more just being around aviators more often than academics.

Good luck to ya! Keep the blue side up, unless you're doing aerobatics of course!! haha

do not need aviation degree since you will have a bachelors

and also.... experience > paper right now in this industry, lots of hires and you need hours/experience the most

When you're done, pack your car and start driving. Within 2-3 months there is a very good chance you would have a flying job.
