Getting Sick During a Pairing

Post by omega »

How does OPS/Dispatch handle situations when a pilot gets to sick to fly while in the middle of their pairing? How about if a pilot has a family emergency and needs to get back home??

If a pilot becomes unavailable for sickness or any other reason they replace him/her. Sometimes it's a simple matter of reassigning another pilot who happens to be in the same place. Sometimes they have to fly another pilot out who may then require crew rest when they get there. Sometimes flights are delayed or even cancelled because of it.

It's the nature of the business.

Depends on the company I suppose. My company they will just fly a RSV/Overtime/anyone else on a pairing to come cover it. If its the last flight out the flight will get cancelled. If its an emergency , just explain your reasons. We all get sick or have family emergency's.

At Jazz you book off. Doesn't matter where you are, if you're sick they encourage using sick days as you can easily spread your sickness to other crew members and the travelling public. They aren't allowed to ask why, all you get is "Give us a call when you're ready to book back on." The company will then find someone to fill your position or the flight will be delayed or cancelled.

I haven't had to do this, but I was told if you are so sick that you can't fly (DH) you just stay at the hotel and the company takes care of it until you're good enough to deadhead.

Slipped on the ice in Syracuse ny, by end of next flight I was stiff, but powered through it, went to hotel had a couple of robaxisal, figured I would be good the next day. Next day comes had a tough time tying my shoes got back to yyz and the captain had me replaced. Biggest pita was the hr cow telling me not to file a wcb claim. Oh you only get 75% or whatever of your wage, yes but it is tax free and they pay for my massages and physio. If you can't safely fly due to injury or sickness, ie manhandle the pig, call it in and go home.

Depending on which province you live in and your insurance you may be better off ( more money) by saying the injury happened outside of work and collecting insurance instead of workers comp.
