Life Insurance For Private Pilot

Post by CrackerJ99 »

Good Morning

With a change in my family situation coming soon I believe it is time for a life insurance policy that covers me for general aviation.

My current policy has an exclusion for recreational flying.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for companies?

Thanks

If you happen to hold an ATPL and a class one medical, Professional Pilot Insurance Plan might cover you. Not sure if it covers recreational flying though.

I have a private pilot fixed wing and commercial helicopter.

Only need coverage for the fixed wing as I don't fly helicopters anymore.

I got my life insurance when I was 18, before getting my commercial fixed wing with sunlife
The agent was aware that I was going to get my pilots license but that didn’t bother them at all.
Maybe cause I was 18 getting a term life policy.
Last time I talked to my agent I tried getting my premium lowered because now I have a medical exam twice a year-supposed in my opinion making me less risk because of preventative exams. The agent wouldn’t go for it but said it was an interesting point.

I was fortunate to have an uncle do my Life Insurance plan for me. He was a broker and he strongly advised me to get my plan in place before starting my training. If you already have your license, I'm not sure what the best option would be, but I'd talk with an insurance broker. Once my plan was in place, the rate and policy remained unchanged, regardless of my flight activity.

I also recommend PPIP. Although I'm not sure if they cover PPL. They were 1/8th the price of a few others that I talked to. I pay $34/month as a commercial pilot.

Thanks for the info

Will make some calls and see what I can find.

If I happen to find some good coverage and rates I will post it on here.

I have my life insurance through industrial alliance. You have to answer risk based questions on flying habits.

Your current insurer will probably remove the exclusion for you, you will just have to pay more.
