I wanted to go to community college, but it starts in September, and ends at the end of june. Not the same schedule as the ice where i work.
And now, most programs are 2 years long......cant afford to miss that much flying!

But hey, dident we go to school to be pilots, not pilots/jackofalltrades? :D

Forget it.....it won't work. Wait til you are done. Float season is too long, and if you bugger up an employer because you leave early it will haunt you.

I am doing it and it works out just fine. Just be up front with your employer about when you want to take off in the fall.

rye sounds like he has things set....if the employer agrees then great. If you have experience then you might have some luck....just don't tell an employer you'll be there until the end of October, that's all. If you're looking for bush work (ie. not floats) the forestry guys only go until the frost catches hold....much earlier end to the season.

I have a few friends who did just that. Flew bush in summers and worked toward their degrees in the winter. Worked out great for all of them. They ended up with some great time in their log books and a degree to back it up.

I knew a couple at Austin's in NW Ont, couple out of Ft Frances, couple more in the Arctic. They used to fly til the labour day weekend, and disappear, and because they weren't going all year, they were flown 150 to 180 hours a month from break-up til fall.

Hey 'Just Curious', just wondering if you still talk to the people who flew up in Ft Frances. You can pm msg me if you'd like. I'd kinda like to get some info about the flying up there.

Istp, the guys that I know of were working in Northwestern Ontario (Fort Frances, Ignace etc). As already posted they would fly from ice out until labor day or so and then attend school all winter. The employers never seemed to mind since by Labor Day things are slowing down anyway so it just let them off the hook as far as lay off's went. Worked great for everyone involved.
