MAG Aerospace

Hi, does anyone know what MAG Aerospace pays their fire detection Skymaster pilots and their birddog Aero commander pilots? I noticed their ad here on Av Canada and was curious if anyone had any info on what they may be like to work for? Thank you.

I dont know the exact numbers, but they pay not too bad for a summer gig. It depends where they put you, if your stations in YSB I believe accommodations are on you, but if youre in Dryden its all paid for. I believe it was something like $4k a month for the skymasters, plus a bonus at the end if you stay for the duration of the entire contract. Alot of guys leave once they get some multi pic. Alot of people seem to really enjoy the job there

I interviewed in January and it was around 900/week on the 337, accommodations paid for. Schedule was something like 23 on/5 off

Thanks, that's pretty decent pay if it is take home actually, and the accommodation is paid so that's even better. Thank you.

Great flying job. Going back for my fourth year. Descent pay with good equipment C-337, 25 days on, 5 days off, housing included, all VFR flying. A few are coming back and the one's who moved on look back on this flying as a great summer. Hours of flying depends on the condition for that summer as I did 235 hours one summer and 85 another year. Average over the years about 150 hours.

Thanks! Do you know what the take home pay is roughly? For the C337 and the Aero commander pilots if you know?

Here is all of the information from my interview. The interview was 30 min.

C337 - $938.00 / week

End of season bonus:
Key Performance Bonus - $1000 if you do excellent work
Retention Bonus - $3000 if you work the entire season

25 on / 5 off schedule
If you work on your days off you receive $200 / day

They don't pay you during training and training can last approx 2-3 weeks (VFR PPC required).
They do pay for accommodation, reimbursement for travel, and meals during training.

MAG provides crew housing. Shared accommodation with private bedroom.

If you end up away from home base, you receive an extra $50/day.

Also, they provide $45 for cellphone / month , a uniform, and iPad.

I forget exactly when the start is, but the contract you sign is for up to September 15th. The actual end date depends on what the MNR wants and if its a really wet summer you'll probably be released from it early. This past season I was done at the end of August when things were starting to die down.

Are they still using the 337 or switching to the DA42 for 2022?

Making a slow switch to the DA42s, not sure when they plan to have the full fleet of them but at least for this upcoming season they're still going to be using the skydisaster

I'm starting up ground school in YSB April 4. Looking forward to this summer! Only downside is I'm not sure the push/pull time will truly count when applying to regionals in the fall.

For some it won’t. A friend just applied to Jazz and it’s written to not put centerline thrust as multi time.

Anyone applied for the 2024 season? pre-interview test is given, 15 questions, 30 minutes to complete. Any insights on what to expect?

Just posted today: $2,500 bonus for the 2024 season. Read about it below.

I flew for Mag for a number of years and enjoyed flying the Skymaster. It was easy summers and stress-less flying as it was only VFR flying. Each year was a different flying adventure as it all depends on the fire season. One year I did 235 hours and another I did 85 hours but it didn't matter as I still got paid to be there. 25 days on, 5 days off was my schedule. The aircraft maintenance was first class and looked after any issues that came up. Never had any major issues nor was there any. Know your equipment and how it operates and all will work out. I met many good pilots at Mag that have moved onto the airlines. The MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) personal were also great to work with. For me it is a great flying position for the summer.

Position Title: Fire Detection Pilots – 2024 Fire Season
Employment Type: Full Time, Seasonal Contract
Location: Various throughout Ontario & Saskatchewan

Role of a Fire Detection Pilot:
Detection Pilots support our Fire and Survey contracts and act as Pilot-In-Command of the Cessna 337 Skymaster. As a Detection Pilot, you will conduct VFR patrols in search of lightning and human-caused wildfires across Northern Ontario. Aerial fire detection plays a critical role in the government’s wildfire management strategy to help ensure wildfires are found early when they are still small enough to be controlled.

Your Qualifications:
• Transport Canada Commercial Pilot Licence and Multi-Engine Rating
• Category 1 Medical
• Valid Group 1 Instrument Rating (Ideal but not mandatory)
