6 Parallel Runways

Post by flyincanuck »

Not to hi-jack the YYZ Parallel runway/x-wind thread, I figured I'd start a new one.

So, my question is, how the heck are they going to number the 6 parallel runways at the new Dubai airport? Hopefully 3 of them will be at least 6 degrees off.

Set to open in 2010. Space for 300 large sized aircraft (747/A380). 120 Million Pax/year.

It smells funny in here :D

Actually the US think-tank assembled to triple airspace capacity is toying with this same "pave down the middle" notion. More runways between existing parallel runways. It might be an idea when we finally get all of this ADS-B, CPDLC, and enhanced radar/ground movement capability, but we're still having a tough time holding short of the runways we've got now.

I wonder what Dubai expects its runway incursion rate to be, or perhaps they have a sophisticated system in place to combat this? I'd like to see their proposed AAR as well.
Neat post though. thanks for sharing.

Maybe retractable spike strips at the hold short lines?

That's one hell of a concept they've got there... taxiing seems like it won't take very long with the layout they have... Wouldn't want to get on the controller's bad side and end up at the far end of the airport!

The arab mentality is let's build the biggest. Look at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, biggest airport in the world (81 sq miles), how many have heard of it? Is it a major hub? no. Most of it isn't even used. It's oil money that's used as a marketing tool for Saudi. Same thing for dubai, Emirates is a huge marketing tool for Dubai and the U.A.E.

I don't foresee all of this traffic yet. At first, I see it as a huge playground. I wouldn't be worried about it being used to the max.

True, true very good points. But by 2010 when the
Canadian job market runs dry and
we all move over there to fly, think of the ramp-ball hockey game we could have on layovers!

Also, I just noticed the lovely runway overrun areas
at the end of each threshold. They must be marketing the airport to AIR FRANCE.

SHAZZZAAAM! Calm down, they're French, so its ok.

We could have simultaneous games going on with all that overrun area. Instead of calling out car, we gotta call out "air france".

On another note, being a francophone, I must put a stop to this air france bashing.

Allez les bleu!

Vive la France

Dubai is very well placed to be a international hub between Europe, Asia, and Oceania. It's a excellent place for a hub, and Emirates, and Dubai knows it. Emirates said that if the A380 was flying passenger service now, they would be flying it. Also, it is a well known fact that Emirates was pushing for the stretched A380-900 version as they need the capacity. Also, Dubai is diversifying it's local economy. They know that they will run out of oil around 2010. They are moving their economy towards a tourist based industry. Dubai is appearing to be a good spot for Europeans escaping from the snow, but also want to go overseas.
