What are the rules of etiquette when it comes to seeding torrents?

leave the seed up until there's a few people with the entire file in the wild. At which point it should be self sustaining.

I would suggest seeding your torrents as much as possible especially if you have rare files...just remember that if you dont seed, people can and will block your ip address and stop you from connecting to them in the future

Well, what's considered a good ratio? I've been trying to go 1:1 uploading as much as I download.

Seeding is not necessary, just be sure to be a good uploader.... 1:1 is good, 1:1.25 or 1:1.50 is even better. But no one should bitch you out for 1:1

Seeing as how I'm apparently... ahem... stupid, can someone explain this whole torrent thing to me? Advancing beyond Limewire and Kazaa has left me behind... I've tried programs like Bitlord and iMesh, but I can't get many search results or just can't figure them out at all. The technology apparently far exceeds the abilities of my feeble and aging mind. What would you guys/gals recommend for getting music/movies?

Yeah, I know... I'm pretty sharp. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play my ColecoVision.

Everyone has a preference and mine would be “uTorrent”, as a client.

Unlike Kazaa, you do not ‘search’ from within the client.

for a ‘review’ of the quality (audio/video).

It depends if it is a site that registers your ratio or not. I use TVTorrents .com and have a whole shitload of gigacredits. If anyone wants and invite PM me.

The general rule is to keep seeding as long as you can when you can so that you can hit and run in the future.

OK, more dumb questions...

Seeding just means having files available for others to d/l? Do you just do this by having your client loaded and internet connected? And if I -- hypothetically speaking, of course -- had a bunch of music on my computer that I wanted to make available to others, do you have to convert it to a torrent or something??

Please keep in mind that I'm new, simple, and confused... go easy on me!!

to me its azureus , fast and clean ...isohunt.com and torrentspy.com for movies ...

I have a question for those in the know. I would like to give a 1 to 1 ratio but the uploading always is much slower than the downloading for me. If I was to download something big...say 2 or 3 days worth....it would take 20 or 30 days to achieve 1 to 1. whats the deal there? I can only give 1 to 1 if my computer is running 24/7/365

I suppose you could change your upload speed if you really wanted to, but that will affect your DL speed as well. I am not "in the know" per se but I have had experience with a couple different programs. The next best thing is to keep seeding as much as you can. I have never been all that worried about it myself.

http://www.torrents.to searches about 10-13 sites all at once and tabs them at the top. Torrentspy, piratebay, torrentreactor, isohunt, are some that are searched with that site.

I will second Azureus for a straight forward program to use as well. Install Azureus, use the site I provided for searches, find what u want, click, and Azureus should automatically start up and start your torrent. Read 'Azureus' on Wikipidia for detailed information on tweaking it to run most efficiently. Also be aware that some internet service providers are blocking ports that are commonly used for torrent downloads as they are sucking up major bandwith (Shaw called my house once in Calgary) but there are ways to mask yourself or use less common ports. Again, read up on Wikipedia.

The extension (r01) tells you that the actual data you downloaded
is a split compressed archive.
In order to access the data in the archive, you need to extract
the archive using the program WinRAR or the freeware program 7zip.
Install either of these programs. Go to the folder containing your download,
right click on any one of the “RAR” files, select “extract to” and point to
the folder destination. The contents will be extracted.
This can take several minutes depending on the size of the archive.

hey man mind making torrents and seeding for a days, my bet is these things would be self supporting after a short period...

It seems I've reached my limit as far as internet technology goes...
How does one make .torrents and seed with utorrent? The .torrents I thought I was making with utorrent do not have the .torrent extension. They come out with the .ISO extension (as the original files are) but utorrent still recognizes the file. Is that normal?

The .iso extension is so you can easily burn a copy to a CD with the file system intact. What the .iso represents is a CD image.

I have the ISO extension down cold. Can I seed a file with a .iso extension that I wanted to be a .torrent extension?
