YWG Assessment Feb 2020

Post by Nekton »

Happy to report I received an invite to the next round of testing in YWG in Feb. Thought I'd start a thread for those who may also be going and to inform about the experience.

Nav Canada website listed Jan. 31 2020 as the cutoff period for applications for this round of testing. I had submitted an application and done the online test back in September of 2019.

At about 1130pm on Jan. 31 I received an email invite to attend the next testing round. It specifically said "This assessment is for a career in Air Traffic Control" so I'm assuming that Flight Service Specialist (AAS or FIC) is not part of this stream, but I don't know for sure.

A few minutes later I received an email with a link to a Workday scheduling site where I had a choice of dates. Testing is in the middle two weeks of Feb. and appears to be only 1 day, choice of Tues/Wed/Thurs each week. So not a lot of notice time between invite and testing. Fortunately I can make this work into my schedule so I chose a day in the second week right away.

Once you confirm your choice a page pops up with information of where to attend, duration (8 hours, 8am to 4pm), and a strong recommendation to arrive early as late comers will not be accommodated. It also mentions to bring everything you will need for the day as far as food and that a fridge will be available to store your stuff. Apparently there is also a cafeteria if you prefer to buy lunch, but I think I'm going to bring food in case time is short and/or lines are long. Who knows, maybe everyone in the building takes lunch at the same time, and I hate being hungry when I'm trying to concentrate.

No mention of the type of testing except that headphones will be used for some of it, and that you can bring your own as long as they plug in to a standard headphone jack, which is pretty cool I thought. I have a set of noise cancelling headphones that I use for travel that have great sound so I think I'll bring them. Presumably they provide headphones for those who don't bring them.

No mention was made of breaks, dress code, prep time, duration of actual tests or type of tests. Just that you should be ready for a full day of testing and that no prior preparation is required. If anyone has suggestions or comments about these things I'd like to hear them.

So that's it! I am excited.

Good day!

Congrats on the invitation! Just to double check this time they haven't sent "preparation to wsim" guide I believe? As this is what they did in previous sessions.

There was no preparation guide included and there was a sentence in the instructions that said specifically:

"There is no advance work or preparation required for the testing session."

Hi,
I received an invite to the next round assessment in Feb as well. The test will be similar to the European FEAST.

Did they say that in the email? Because it didn't in mine (it being the FEAST)

The one day assessment is FEAST. Your results will determine what stream you qualify for. If you are unsuccessful, you may be invited back to test for other streams.

Just sat the 1 day assessment at the YWG ACC yesterday. I can confirm it was the FEAST testing. As many others have said, we have to agree not to disclose details so can't say much about the specifics. What I would say though is that although practice and familiarity with these tests might allow you to score well and proceed to the next stage I think this process has been very carefully analyzed and crafted. I suspect the farther on you get the more quickly it will become apparent to them that you either do, or don't, have the skills they are looking for regardless of whether you ace this particular stage or not. My feeling about my own performance is that I did well on all but the final task. I have no idea how the testing is weighted so we'll just have to see how it turns out.

As for the testing conditions and environment, the facility was very nice, the staff pleasant, and the testing room quiet and well equipped. There was a place to store your lunch if you brought it and the cafeteria was not too busy for those that wanted to buy lunch instead. Although the schedule was fairly tight no one was rushed and there were sufficient breaks during the testing to use the washroom or just take breather.

We were told it would take at least a couple of weeks for results to be compiled and that the next round of testing would likely be in April or May for those who were successful. There were 10 in my testing session, most from YWG FIR but a few from farther abroad. Everyone seemed nice and the group dynamic was pleasant. If any of you are reading this, glad to have met you and hope to see you again at the next round.

I was in the first FEAST session on Feb 12, anxiously awaiting results like the rest of you. YYZ assessments took place a week prior to YWG, and apparently they should be getting results sometime this week, so shouldn't be long for us.

Got an email saying I "passed the minimum mark and may be considered for further testing". Is this an indication of how well I did in FEAST or is this a general statement to all passers at this stage? :?:

Received an email today stating I had met the minimum requirements and am eligible to move on for further testing, but with no specific invitation at this time. Anyone else receive the same?

Same here. Got the same message but no option to schedule the next step (which I think is the 2-day bootcamp).

Unfortunately I received an email saying I did not meet the minimum for ATC, however, it also says I may be eligible for further testing for FSS. If I am interested in that stream I need to reply to the email stating my interest and then wait for further instructions. It also says in bold type that relocation WILL be required and could be to any of the 55 FSS or 8 FIC facilities in the country.

I am going to reply that I am still interested and see what comes. I could be totally happy in an FSS role. I expect it would be a minimum 2 year commitment (as I've read about in other posts) before I could apply for a transfer but it would also open up the opportunity to apply for ATC again once I'm already in the system.

Anyone else in this situation? Also congrats to all of you who passed this round. Hope you make it all the way.

Just received an email saying all assessments (the upcoming 2-day bootcamp) are cancelled for the moment due to COVID19. Hopefully they don't forget to contact us again once the dust settles.. :prayer:

Well well well...it turns out the latest projection for a vaccine is 18 months and guess who has to wait 18 months to reapply?

Jokes aside, that sucks but someone hit the nail on the head the other day it seems. I don’t think it caused a delay in pass/fail but I literally came on here to see if this was mentioned. Hopefully things move smoothly for everyone! Sorry to hear that folks!

It's been a while since I've had any communication from Nav Canada but yesterday I received an email update on the FSS opportunity.

Just as Covid restrictions were ramping up I received notice that, although I did not pass the Feast, I may be eligible for FSS, but that all new testing and training had been put on hold. I was asked to reply indicating whether I would be interested in the FSS stream and to keep my Workday information current. I didn't hear anything more after I replied and I expected it would be a very long time until things got sorted out, so yesterday's email was a nice surprise. It basically said that my reply had been received and that I would be placed in the candidate pool for FSS. My Workday status has also been changed to 'Interview' which is pretty encouraging. The email also stated that recruitment is still on hold and that nothing would proceed until the Covid situation changes, with not timeline given, but that I can be assured my application has not been forgotten and will remain active until they return to normal operations.

Anyone been through the FSS stream who can elaborate on what happens next? Is there further testing or is the next step just an interview stage? What to expect?
