Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
Speaking of Dash 8 fire suppression, does anyone know what the regs are on certification when it comes to combis?
The Dash 8-100/200 combis have an awful lot of space for freight and bags, no aisle to walk down to extinguish a fire, and no built-in fire extinguishers. Not sure about Air Inuit's 300 Combi mod.
Meanwhile the Q400 has full fire suppression in a baggage space that's much smaller than the above combis' space.
ATR maintains an aisle I believe?
So what's up with that?

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
Dash 8 100 and probably the earlier 300 models require a space above the bags for a person to crawl above the baggage with a fire extinguisher. The later versions have a divider making a mini isle in the back.
Also depends on what category of cargo compartment, A, B, C or D. I'm no expert on cargo compartment certification requirements, but you're free to look it up in the CARs.

I believe the DH8-106s (basically the Q100s) had the mini-isle as well, but I've been wrong before. Does Jazz have any of those?
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
I don’t believe so. Even if we did I think the -100s are pretty much removed from service now.goingnowherefast wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 6:30 pm I believe the DH8-106s (basically the Q100s) had the mini-isle as well, but I've been wrong before. Does Jazz have any of those?

Jazz has never had any Q models except for the 400.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
So has Jazz utilized the freighter config yet?
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
How much pop and chips can they haul ?
Better practice those short field landings

Rumor has it, that it has not actually operated.

I asked some Q pilots and yes, best intentions but the idea never “took off”

Unlike AC which sourced customers prior to developing their cargo mods, Jazz took the “If you build it, they will come” approach.
Nobody came.
Nobody came.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
I really thought when they had announced this that they had already figured out a structure to distribute some of the freight AC was bringing into YYZ/YUL to smaller communities...
Obviously that wasn't the case.

They'll be out of cycles, so run them unpressurized with a giant hole cut in the side to fit roof rafters. I'm sure they'll still be sporting Jazz paint because anybody in Pickle Lake is too cheap to paint planes.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
Hopefully the first thing a cargo Dash would have is a barn door.goingnowherefast wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 5:08 pm This mod leaves the seat tracks, windows, overheaed bins and everything still intact. Basically takes the seats out and strap down cargo to the seat tracks instead. The isle needs to be open because fire supression will be people walking down the isle with a fire extinguisher. There's no weight reduction, nothing being done to actually make it into a "good" freighter. This is temporarily repurposing the airplane to haul a little freight. They want the plane to quickly transform back into a passenger aircraft with minimum effort. If they wanted a perminant Q400 freighter, the overhead bins would be gone, windows removed and plugged with aluminum, floor would be entirely changed. Fire supression would be automated so the now non existant isle can carry cargo. The weight capacity of a perminant Q400 freighter would be substantially higher than this temporary mod.

Yeah hopefully, turn the air stairs into a massive cargo door if there becomes a real Q400 freighter. The rear doors needs to support flight loads from the tail, the front just needs to support the cockpit weight, no controlling and stabilizing forces.

Did Jazz offer to fly freighter for 10% off? Just curious.
