I remember the day this accident happened ... very sad.
I get it that it’s always the pilot’s responsibility to fly the airplane in a safe manner. However, from the first day I have personally believed the Tower Controllers unwittingly played a significant role in this accident.
My take away:
Respect ATC, But don’t get intimidated by them. Be Ready to speak up when you need to.

Standard phraseology!
"keep it in tight" when you are on final? What does that even mean?
Keeping the plane in the loop is one thing, but controlling traffic is mainly the controller's job.
My first reaction while watching the clip, while unprofessional and somewhat -inappropriately- in jest, was "F*** it, I'd spin it in too"

The ATC instructed, and the pilot mistakenly accepted to stay in the circuit for a Runway with PURE Gusty Crosswind:
Wind 090 degrees 13 Gusting 18 for landing on runway 35...
that is pure crosswind over the right wing.... with a 5 knot gust factor for a small single engine with 3 American size passengers. And the pilot is probably a weekend warrior type pilot with not much experience/recency with crosswinds like that.
I’d call all that a recipe for disaster.
May the pilot and 2 passengers Rest In Peace

There is a bottom line to this accident.....
It is not ATC complexity or crosswinds. It is retracting the flaps when the speed is too slow to do so. Be deliberate in actions. Want to retract the flaps...check your airspeed first. This pilot retracted them more than once when the speed was too slow, with each time being worse than previous. Sure it was busy but it can be even busier at uncontrolled airports with all kinds of strange things happening. And there are all kinds of distracting situations that can come up.
Check airspeed then if it is OK, retract the flaps. Some people get into this habit of just automatically rushing to grab the flap handle. One needs to be deliberate while controlling the aircraft(which can be a handfull if significantly out of trim) while ensuring that they make the proper flaps selection instead of accidentally doing something such as flaps fully up when, in an aircraft such as a Cirrus, an intermediate selection is what should be selected.
Keeping your cool is part of the process and remember that if one is worried about a flap overspeed which is causing a rush to retract, a bit of an overspeed is unlikely to kill or even cause damage.
