Uncontained failures are scary. I just read about the A380 engine failure over Greenland where a several ton fan broke off. It happend to depart upward. If it had gone toward the aircraft, it was said that it probably would have crashed.

The BEA in France did some sort of calculation of where the disk likely would have landed in order to find it. Not the first time I have heard of that as the same was done by the TSB quite a few years back to find a prop that departed from an ATR out of Val D'or.
