Best Ramp
If any of you fly for this great company, which ramp within your range do you enjoy the best? Inversely which one do you hate the most and why?
The more you know the more trouble you can get in!

I can attest to that... my flight out of Toronto in mid-December was delayed on the ground for over a hour. I was sitting in the starboard side of the airplane with a clear view of the baggage handlers and they were goofing off, and were sluggishly loading on the baggage...Snow Monkey wrote:Most of the US ramps that we serve are really easy in and out. YYZ is probably one of the more unsatisfactory. The Carribean is also very user friendly.
YUP, YYZ baggage handlers suck... but you get what you pay for and so far WestJet's attempts have been blocked to bring in there own TAC because they are not 'unionized'.
As for best ramp, it would be Tampa in my opinion, they are second to none. In Canada, I'll say its YWG followed by the smaller stations like YQR/YXE/ and YLW.

when you compare the amount of traffic vs quality, yyc is hands down #1!youngen18 wrote:i say YYC but i am slightly biased since i am TAC there.
I totally agree that YYZ is definitley the worst.

some of the smaller bases are even better, but they don't handle nearly the same amount of planes/day to deal with that you guys do.

No kidding
Globe Ground in YYZ is the worst. Last week was a good example, two guys showed up to service the A/C. They claimed that because it was a nice day in TO that particular Sunday, there was a lot of sick calls.
They went on to claim that upline stations had mixed up all the baggage and it had to be re-sorted.(no doubt these two were on OT)
The whole pig orgy took about two hours. This was the final delay(there were others upline) that put us over our duty time, costing the owners money.

Just because you're not paranoid, doesn't mean no-one's out to get you.

Servisair,
I have to wonder, who twisted your arm amd forced you to take the job? Who's forcing you to work there? Is your Mama dictating where you work?
Most people in life bail out if they don't like thier job(s). What's your problem? The fact is....if you don't like who you're working for then stop bitching and bail out.
If indeed it is Swissport taking over in YYZ then all I can say is IT'S ABOUT TIME!!

I never said I didnt like my job. I love working the ramp. but face it, WJ is one of the worst airline to work ramp. And the other guy was right, you do get what you pay for. WJ pays something like $800 a turn if your lucky, compared to British Airways or Cathay Pasific that are paying close to $10,000 a turn. Who's gonna get the better service?
If some of you remember when WJ was based at T2 the service was alot better then recently. The ramp workers were seperated in 2 seperate parts of the company. Westjet ramp and T3 ramp. When the merge took place to join both ramps together at T3 no one was trained properly or at all. Guys whom had never done WJ were given turns on their own and WJ guys were given wide bodies and no one on the crews knew how to work a container loader. Your not the only ones to see delays this season.

Serviair,
Don't want to go too much further into this convo with you but I highly doubt Westet is paying $800 per turn and big guys are paying 10 grand. Naturally the big guys will have to pay more due to the handling company's large equipment investment requirements in order to handle wide bodies.
The fact that you and your fellow rampies weren't trained is not the fault of the airline but rather the fault of the company you work for.
8 flights at 30 minutes each over an 8 hour shift means you're only working for 4 hours a day.....and 18 bucks an hour.
Shity wages in the airline business are all around us.....just ask a LCC pilot.
Good luck to ya!

Well with all that aside you have to see the irony in switching to Swissport at YYZ. Before WJ was with Globeground they were with Worldwide Flight Service but went to Globe because of the bad service they were getting with worldwide. Now swissport is totally made up of former worldwide employees. Back to the same crews doing the same flights.
When Swissport took over our operations in YVR from Worldwide, they hired about 12 guys from Worldwide - and most of them were recommended by Westjet - and no more. The rest were hired off the street. I'm pretty sure the same will be happening with Swissport in YYZ to avoid the same problems that Servisair spoke of.

I'm sure as long as the wages are less than what you could afford to feed/house yourself, (let alone dependants), on in the GTA, the service will remain exactly the same. I don't think anyone applies to be a groundhandler anywhere thinking they're going to be rich, but if the industry wants to "Walmart" their groundhandling services, they get exactly what they deserve. If WJ wants good turns, maybe they should make the groundhandlers "owners" too!
