Flyng Jump Seat

Post by klimman123 »

Back in the day (prior 9/11) whenever I had to take a commercial flight I would ask if I could ride in the jump seat. 99% of the time, it wouldn't be a problem. But since 9/11 I haven't even bothered to ask. I know new rules have been put in place to provide extra safety in the cockpit, but what are they? Are there any exceptions to the rule????

Usually there is only a few people allowed in the J.S. now:

Transport Canada Inspectors
Company Employees
Pilots/Dispatchers On "FAM" flights

It varies depending on which airline you fly for. Several companies are in negotiations to have the J.S. available for other airline employees free of charge, however, it would be ONE seat in the back per flight.
Don't think you'll be able to sit up front anytime in the near future. Kinda sucks as I remember sitting in the J.S. on a C3 flight to and from the Dominican over 10 years ago when I was first starting to fly. Now I can't ever return the favor to someone else......I say it should be up the the Captain......

Anyone else out there have different rules with their company?

Ya I think it's just TC and people directly employed by the airline that get to sit up front. If you have a jumpseat agreement with another company your jumpseat is in the back with the rest of the pax.

I know with WestJet, only employees and tc are susposed to, but I've seen pilots let family member sit up there. I guess it's their final call.
