Sable Island

Post by gapper »

Watching a show on Sable Island and now it's on my bucket list of Canadian locations I would like to fly to.
Has anyone flown private aircraft there and is it allowed? Looks like they land on beaches.

Years ago there was a company (I think YHZ based) that flew BN2A Islanders regularly out to Sable mostly to resupply the weather station there...not sure where they landed on the island or if these flts still take place.

I saw a picture recently of a twin otter that landed on the beach there. It was either PAL or Air Labrador a few years ago. I’ve also read “flying on the edge” (a great book) and they routinely landed on the beach there back in the day.

A few operators routinely fly into Sable Island still. Sable Aviation which flies a BN2A Islander, and Air Borealis with the DHC6. All of course landing on the beach. Not sure about AB but Sable Aviation may do some charters from time to time. A company out of YQY, Breton Air recently got approval to run charters to Sable Island via Helicopter.

You can't fly your own aircraft to the island. It's a closed national park. Only way to get there is by a flight service and it's at least $2200 per person.

If the fare is $2200 whats the fine for landing there if you are caught? I bet it's like $120 for landing in the park.

No trees were harmed in the transmission of this message. However, a rather large number of electrons were temporarily inconvenienced.

For those with permits, there is a 500 dollar landing fee, plus there is a 'per person' fee for the park. There are a few more fees listed on the Parks Canada website
