What jet to buy ? (6-8 passengers jet). Exploitation costs ?

Post by Vico56 »

Hi there,

If you were looking to buy a jet with room for 6-8 passengers, which model would you buy ? What king of annual costs are to be expected ?

Budget around a million CAD to buy the aircraft.

Thanks

A million dollars gets you a new shiny four seat piston single; I’m not sure what condition a biz jet would have to be in to go that cheap.

Maybe a used up lear 35, a battered citation 560 or a falcon 20 that needs a ton of work. Average hourly operating cost of 4-5k an hour operating. Annual cost will depend on the time on the machine and tbo parts. Even then, you won’ll only be getting one headache after another.

Likely better off with a good used piston twin.

Or a turbine. You can find proper king airs and mu2s in that budget.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Budget and requirements are out of touch with each other. Any jet large enough to fill that mission will eat up more than that in annual costs by a fair margin - mostly with maintenance.

A Lear 55 is one of the only options, and it barely squeezes into that budget with a 40 year old airframe. But...you will blow through that acquisition budget with import and inspections. Plus you'll probably spend between 1.2-1.5M per year to fly 300 hours - if you're lucky and you don't like your pilots very much.

Yeah after some researches on internet it sounds like a better idea indeed.

You really should talk to someone who does this sort of thing for a living. There are a few aircraft management companies who might be willing to spare the time for a quick chat, or you might find their services more attractive than trying to dive in to the unknown.
While a plane might look like a plane, and specs might not seem to differ greatly, but depending on the expected mission, seemingly minor differences have an effect that do not end up being subtle, especially financially. In some circumstances it can make the difference between a usable tool or completely, literally, throwing a million bucks away on the wrong choice that you won't recoup. You might be surprised at how quickly the numbers can get very large.

Best of luck!

While the initial post might not be serious, the question of what to get is a serious one.

The first thought that entered my mind was to contact one of the bizjet magazine writers like Fred George who is very technical.

Not sure if it is a realistic idea but someone like that might be someone who doesn’t have an angle, which could be a possibility with a management outfit.

Some small jets are really cheap . Mostly because it is very difficult to get insurance approval for pilots . Special training is required for quite a few small turbo props as well . Talk to your insurance before you write any cheques . You might have to hire someone to fly it for you if the insurance cannot get the pilot approval , as some jets are very expensive to insure properly.
