Ok, so here is the scenario. If you get a class 4 instructor rating in jan of 04, then upgradr to a class 3 in november of 04. When does your class 3 expire?

Your Class 3 will expire 2 years from the date it was issued.

"421.65 Period of Validity - Aeroplane and Helicopter
The initial Class 3 Flight Instructor Rating shall be issued valid to the first day of the twenty-fifth month following the month in which the most recent instructor flight test was conducted."
So yours is good until the 1st day of Feb. 2006 becuase you didn't do a flight test when you upgraded from 4 to 3. Sorry but I think your expired.

It expires on whatever date it says on your licence.

If you upgraded to a class III in November 2004 it will expire on December 1, 2006. Then if you take an instructor renewal course before it expires it will be current for another 2 years with out a flight test. At least thats the way every class III I know does it, and I don't think they're flying expired.

The initial Class 3 Flight Instructor Rating shall be issued valid to the first day of the twenty-fifth month following the month in which the most recent instructor flight test was conducted.
the way i see it is you will expire if upgrading from a class 4 the fist day of the 25 month folloing the class 4 flight test. and if you have just renewed throught flight test, refresher course or administrative renewal then you get 2 years from that date.
if you have expired the refresher course is no good to you! you have to go the flight test route.
good luck!

i thought there was something like a 2 week window that you could get in. It doesnt really matter if i get it renewed now or a year from now, just curious thats all

If you got it in Januardy 2004 then it was originally valid until Feb. 1, 2005.
When you get your Class 3 it tags an extra year onto your validity period - therefore it would have been valid until Feb. 1, 2006.
If it didn't work this way no one would upgrade to a Class 3 until the month their Class 4 was to expire. Unless they wanted the extra buck an hour.
If you renew a Class 3 it is good until the 1st day of the 25th month - 2 years. If you renewed it today it would be valid until March 1, 2008. But it
must be valid in order to renew it with any method other than a flight test.

I was talking to transport the other day and I didn't know that you could renew this way, but he told me that you can renew your Class 3 for another 2 years without going to the refresher just by submitting paper work that shows you've recomended 5 succesful flight tests....wierd eh?[/list]

Actually you only need 4 successful flight tests, out of 5 recommends.
The wording in the CARs is:
(c) in the previous 24 months, has acquired at least 300 hours of flight instructor experience and had, in this period, at least 80% of candidates recommended for the applicable flight tests pass on the first attempt. The renewal shall be based on no fewer than 5 flight tests.
