I was at my local flight school earlier today and my instructor happened to tell me that he's one of the only instructors left at the school who's qualified on their twin. I don't think that the abundance of instructors is necessarily a given.

Every time I'm there, their Twin Comanche, a 1964 model, seems to be in action. At least visually, it seems to be considerably better taken care of than the C152s and C172s. I'm not thinking about my multi rating yet, so haven't asked whether there's a waiting list. Maybe I'll do that the next time I'm there.

I understand that operating a 30-year-old twin, with retractable landing gear and constant props might be costly, but how bad can it be when flight schools are literally dropping the rating even with long waiting lists. EU and USA flight schools lease newer twins, and it seems to be working here. Why not try to do the same here in Canada? Why try to squeeze that 1979 Seneca until its wings fall apart? I'm getting to the point of hopelessness...

What should I do?
What you should do is be prepared to pay a realistic price to fly that shiny new twin. That's a lot more $$$$$ than you think.
their light twin is a financial black hole and the they are not in the position of doing anything about it.
Sure they are. They can charge what the plane costs to operate. But students don't want to pay it.

If you can get access to an aircraft and would like to work with a freelancer, send me a PM. In the meantime:

*If* schools are shutting down ME programs despite wait lists (I say "if" because I haven't seen this, but I have seen numerous SE-only schools choose not to get into the ME market), it's because the cost of operating the aircraft prices them out of the market (i.e. - no customers want to pay what the aircraft costs).

In the mid '90's, I paid $205/h for ME training. If you adjust that for inflation at a measly 3%, the training rate should be $455/h. If you adjust it at a more realistic 5%, the rate comes in at $755/h. As a first approximation, any twins that are operating below this range are probably losing money.

I think perhaps a lot of schools that operate twins, can do so at a thin margin, because they make up the difference on the front end of those "cadet programs" or whatever. You'll pay a minimum for a full CPL+ME+IFR as a package. They tack on .3 here and there every flight for the commercial portion for completing their 12 page, 172 before takeoff checklist, add in a couple dozen "refresher" flights throughout the program, etc. and the school can afford to do your multi training in the 5 hours or whatever it takes at $350/hr or whatever they charge now.

Just a theory.

Try the St. Thomas Flight Centre at https://www.learntofly.on.ca/ They're in St. Thomas, ON which is about 20 minutes from London.

Their PA-23 Apache is literally up flying around with a student as I write this.

There are schools out there that can train you. The list is long and you already have a couple more here.

We have a classic Seneca 3 with a well upgraded avionic. It should be ready in April
www.aviatorschool.ca

But as some already said, it's a pit of money for most of the schools and yes, you can fly a newer plane with some school but you will pay for it. It's all the trouble with all school aircraft, you want newer and better-equipped aircraft but the market doesn't want to pay them...
