YYC is a fairly senior base. I believe last I saw the seniority list, upgrades were going around mid 2017 DOH range depending on type.

Things will change over the coming months I’m sure.

Remember that there are many pilots whose seniority can hold a CA seat but don't have ATPL. This is a variable that is hard to capture from equipment bid to equipment bid where you could have one where most new CA awards go to pilots senior to the most junior CA and the next bid being the exact opposite.

Something to keep in mind, but pure seniority wise, I would guess that a 2022 New hire would have access to a CA seat in 18 to 24 months.

It's hard to commute when you have a set schedule. If you're on reserve, it's impossible. You need to be within 2 hrs of the "crew room".

There are senior FOs at Jazz that won't upgrade because they live further than 2 hrs away, and if they get that left seat (as a junior capt. on reserve), it would mean they have to have some sort of crash pad / rental unit near their base. Any money you'd make extra you'll spend it on that.

Just a thought...

I don't recommend commuting, unless it's for a very short period of time. It gets old very quick. Take it from me.

I got an invite for a sim eval in YYZ at the end of April. They said it was in a Dash 300 sim.

Congrats to both of you. Probably is the CAE sim that Jazz use to operate before retiring the type.

Best advise I can give is to make use of your PM, keep him busy.

With the -8 sim in YVR going unused as well, I wouldn’t be surprised if they maximize these sims in both cities to run the sim evals. Significantly better equipment than when I did it that’s for sure!

Good luck to all moving through the process, and yes, utilize your PM to the max.

How Long did you you have to wait from the interview to when they invited you if I may ask?

Most of the hiring being done will be for spots on the RJ and Q. YYZ Q flying is a shadow of what it used to be.
Very little ots hiring expected for the Emb.

Interesting you say that. May I ask why? It's not like the Embraer is a "senior" aircraft any more than the Q or the RJ (for junior F/Os. When it comes to Captain seniority it's a whole different thing). I think it's the luck of the draw. Whatever spots will be available will be given away to new hires.

The fact that the Embraer is only in YYZ and YUL it makes it "a bit" junior because most pilots that want to live out West will not go for the Embraer. If you're not sure what you want to do with your life (living wise), picking the RJ would be a good decision, because it's at all four bases, it has decent and varied routes.

Even if you get YUL RJ, you can bid YYC and get it eventually. If you bid the Embraer, you're more or less stuck on it for 4 years and you'll have to fly out of the Eastern bases.

Current plan is no new-hire spots on E175 before the fall. This is largely due to no training space available on that SIM.

Will be interesting if it develops that a large number of departures between June-September for AC are E175 pilots (all flow based on Jazz seniority. No reserved seniority numbers at AC so no deferral option). Regardless, there may be departures of E175 pilots to Porter although that timeline may be less certain.

As you mentioned, Vacancies filled in-house first (frozen pilots excepted). There are also pilots with reinstatement rights. Still, I would expect that there will likely be some E175 FO vacancies that are unfilled after the August equipment bid.

This is spot on.

Even the next bid will not change this dynamic much. A lot of pilots operating the E175 right now are doing so on temp basis pending the training of the pilots who were awarded it in the last bid. For the time being, the company has a way to mitigate the vacancies created by departure and next bid award by metering the movement of pilots who were forced off the E175. That and it is safe to expect that some of those temp position may be able to hold the E75 on the next bid.

For all these reasons, do not expect seeing NH on E75 for a while.

Rudder & Outlaw,

Thanks for that detailed info. That makes sense.

Things are a bit different with this pandemic and all the issues it caused (everyone). I imagine once the industry goes back to some sort of normality, the E175 (slots) will be like every other airplane at Jazz, available based on movement, retirements, transfer, etc.
