Can someone confirm that this is a different crash from the "Wawa crash"? Wawa was a Comanche, pilot and pax, is this a second, Cherokee, pilot and 3 pax? Or might there be confusion, and SAR recently found the first crashed Piper?

Yes, a different plane.

This one left Dryden, ON Friday night and crashed about an hour later. SAR techs found this one the next morning, early. 4 bodies have been recovered.

Dang another Northern one, at least the ELT worked this time to locate the plane. Condolences to the family and friends.

While weather may not have been a cause, it was not very good for VFR in the dark. Sunset was about 2020 local time. I do not know when they headed out from Dryden but here is the weather at Sioux Lookout on April 29, 1400-0000 local time.

Flightradar24 shows a small piper in the area around 02z…..
It was rainy….. it was dark….it’s been a long day beating across the continent at 80kts….
Dark in that area is dark. There may be a tower light blinking somewhere, maybe not. On a cloudy night, it’s IFR.
Very sad

4 people in a Cherokee 140 does not leave much weight for fuel to go cross country either (depending on the size of the people).

It appears they were going across the country in a series of relatively short hops. A bit of an unusual track coming out of Dryden:

Interesting....the aviation-safety-net link above says it is a Warrior 161. Everything I see in T/C is a 140. Does not matter in the end, ie, still a Cherokee and still 4 lives lost. The Warrior has a slightly larger gross weight and larger engine so how does a reporter or safety reporter get that kind of data wrong? :?

Just frustrating to see reports that I would normally believe, to be false.

Wish that we knew the thought processes for taking off in those conditions, etc.

Thanks for the links

Registration comes up as a '67 PA28-140. That particular model likely has between 750-800 lbs useful load.

Thai news reports that he may have been suicidal. I wonder what he was doing in an Cherokee 140 with three other people. Perhaps the last few minutes of the flight were more interesting than initially thought.

The irony that by choosing GA he incurred the same penalty he was trying to avoid.

He was killed in a plane crash. That's something we all try to avoid.

The text appears to have been updated to the correct version of the Cherokee. Nothing in the CADORS yet.

No. Pilot has been identified and the airplane owner has been identified on the media links posted (CBC, Vancouver Sun, etc).

I seems that the occupants were from a non traditional sector of our society:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british- ... -1.6441818

I expect that there were unusual pressures to continue a "private" (clandestine?) flight...

Oh clandestine flights have been successfully (and unsuccessfully) happening for a while now. Incidents like these may start tightening security among GA as seen in other parts of the world… unfortunate
